Haven’t posted much the past few months. Bought a house, sold a house, remodeled a house in between. Lots of stuff going on but hell, ya’ll know how that is.
I build more 660’s than any other saw. Lots of them around here and frankly I’m fond of them. I don’t care for them stock but love them with some work. I’ve also got spare cases and parts in general. So......I had a guy that wants a 660 hopped up. I agreed and that’s where this begins.
Not long after guy no. 1 paid for his 660 upfront (which is always nice) guy no. 2 (a logger) wants two 660’s built. All three will be split with new bearings/seals....the whole kit n kaboodle so to speak. I figured Let’s try 3 different approaches and see which saw runs the strongest.
The first 660 case was in pretty good shape/crank looks good so we’ll just split/Rebuild and go from there. I split 7-8 cases that evening....keep that in mind for later.....
Guy no.1 also wants a wrap handle, no problem $34.99 from my Stihl dealer buys the wrap brake flag (1122 790 9102)
I didn’t document pressing the bearings in. I figure most of us are good with that part. I like to press my bearings in though, the Dake arbor press comes in handy for that and I can press bearings in and on to the crank in roughly half an hour.
After I joined the halves together I went to mount the jug to the case and realized that I had grabbed two mismatched case halves (7-8 split cases earlier, notice the color of the two halves in the above picture)
Before we go any further we’ve got to fix the cylinder mount area being different heights. One side was .007 higher than the other. Since I’m cutting the base anyways to set squish at .020 I take .015 off the case.
Now we’re ready to spin the wheel....
