Me too. I went to rent one, just a 30-40 ft lift. The guy at the rental place demo'd it with me in it. He took it all the way up and the wind was blowing that day. It was swaying like crazy IMO. I said "I have seen enough, take me down, I will let you know, thank you for your time". I called a tree service the next day.
A man knowing his limits is a smart man.

I’ve been 135’ up in a boom lift. They have 185’ now I’d like to take a ride up in and look around.

We had (2) 180’ Genies in Ticonderoga in 2016.

The rentals were over $22k/ a month per unit. My memory is foggy- I want to say closer to $29k.

They had to pull them out of Toronto because none of the Rental Companies had any available on the East Coast.

They had the Wind Meters on the basket like on the tip of a crane.

We used 120’ and 135’ in the glass industry. Usually for the lifting capacity at shorter boom lengths. We had one that tipped into the building when we missed the estimated weight of the insulated unit we took out! We kicked the unit off and let it hit the ground and it about slung is out of the basket. Thank goodness for safety gear! We had to have a 120’ to reach straight out over a big parking garage embankment.

Meh,

In 1/2 a day Deeter or I could have you flying a big boom with no problem.

The stuff they have on those things these days works & keeps you from doing wrong.

Get the machine on firm level ground & rise to wherever you need to go.

We had a guy moving an older refurbed 120’ JLG that was not paying attention to the route he was taking.( it was an old low tech machine Dom.)

Anywho,
He transitioned from the gravel staging area to the sloped floor of the Ball Mill & did not realize there was as steep of a slope as it really was.

He was sucked all the way in but being in a 120’ he was a good ways away from the rear tires & could not see that 1 rear was over 3’ off the ground trying to compensate for the uneven terrain.

We flagged him down & got him to take another path to the opposite side of the Ball Mill but I’ve never forgotten that after 13 years.

Modern machinery is very intuitive, you are right. My daddy's Lull wont allow you to oscillate the chassis if it is beyond a certain point of angle, and will actually slow movement approaching said limit.

This one has been shinny side down before.

Someone had placed pennies on the sensors.

Pro Tip:
If/when it starts acting crazy check for sensors being overridden.

We have had a couple of them. The unit with the 4bt is the best thus far. Starts very well in the cold. The john Deere powered unit was a pig.
