IMG_20160223_194124.jpg IMG_20160223_194132.jpg IMG_20160223_194152.jpg I have a Hacked up 7900 that I enjoy very much. I picked up this 6400 as a project and since I have a good 6400 piston and cylinder I thought that I would mess with it a little before I jump to another 7900.

I did not see a question, Keith. Based on the title of your thread, I expected a question.

Ok now the questions for the more experienced. I put my cylinder and piston on. Without a base gasket the squish measures at .014. The base gasket measures at .020". I can cut a paper gasket that is .010" so that would put it around .024". Looking at the cylinder it looks like the exhaust could be widened a good bit on this. Is there any other recommended changes to the cylinder without turning it on a lathe? The muffler has a center cage. Any benefit to enlarging the holes in it? Also based on the above pic I could cut a hole in the dented side and have a deflector welded on.

Thoughts?

You could use sandpaper on an appropriately sized dowel (old piston perhaps) and sand the squish band down .006" and go gasket less and be at .020" squish.

Not saying that the final .004" is worth getting. Just putting an option out there.

Based on the dented muffler...I would heat the seam and split it...gut it...pound out the dent as best you can...enlarge the factory opening as large as you can, and crimp it back together.

Keith,

I would work the cylinder to get it to the n'th (.020). I've done it by hand and different gasket material just like you have. Now that I have a lathe I have more options.

The muffler I would split and tap out using as shot bag(shooting rest) or sand bag....you'll be surprised how good it will come out. Since your inside you can remove the cage and open up the exhaust also.

Can this muffler be heated and uncrimped on the shell only or does something need to come out of the center tubes?

Yes....uncrimp enough to separate.....I kinda slide it out the bottom/ side. Once you get it loose your able to kinda twist/ wiggle it off.

Just the edges. Heat and un crimp from the top. The cage can be gutted or cut off at the muffler inlet. It's the spacer and washer for the muffler so don't just toss it.
