We all know how hard it is to find a clutch side case in nice shape, well I have one but the bearing does not fit in the case as tight as i would like it- goes in to easy but not all that far gone, like to use that case is there a good solid fix for that that I can feel confident about?

will give it a try, I also heard to just use a sharp center punch and lightly peen it as well as the locktite but pretty close tolerances as it is probably wouldn't need to and wouldn't want to effect it's centering, must have 5 or 6 of those model still in pieces because of what I consider the working side case a weak point in that size of saw.

It's called stippling and only need done where excessive play exists. It only need be done on the wear area, so it could be all the way around or could be just one side, then the loctite will fill the rest of the void and hold the bearing firm.

Also new cases are available at a fair price for this model and may be a good option for some rebuilds, especially when you consider it has new bearings already installed. I have brought back a few 395's from the dead in this manor.

If you get a new set of case halves just think how much you’ll save on installing all those helicoils too :D

green locktite and some heat. stuff is used to set bearing races in transmissions so it should work in a saw.

edit believe its number 609

Yes or permatex #64000

The only problem on that is I live in Canada and your $ is about 30 cents on the buck plus shipping and all and since I build a lot of saws I wouldn't be making much off of that, although it looks tempting- kinda have to say no to my finger from pushing the purchase button - besides I'd have to dirty them up a bit to not clash with the plastics.

Sorry that's not a fit for you, but, when others read this, they can at least know there are options that still make economic sense for certain models.

Thanks for the info but over 300$ to get it here would be fine if it was my own personal work saw but most of the time a 372 or 390 is what I usually use for my own firewood... been using a 461 I rebuilt lately, - nice saw.

I repaired a spun bearing on an 048 Stihl by "raising" the metal in the bearing pocket with a prick punch and using a product made by Loctite called press fit .It's an old trick done on automatic high speed automation in the auto industry often done on a slightly damaged bearing pocket .Severely damaged takes an over bore and a sleeve .

Will see what they have at our local automotive shops, thx for the info, have a member with a good case half I'm buying so to fix this one case will be able to put 2 out in the work force... love 3 series saws, easy to work on.
