Just a muffler mod makes a 390 equal to a stock 661, so it starts with a slight disadvantage, but that doesn't mean it can't become the better ported saw.

I'll take my 390 over any saw I've ever ran from old school 262 up to 395 husky and 038 up to 660 mag Stihl . Can not stand a boat anchor 395 sorry but I have better things to do than carry the extra weight just to fight it all day to get it to crank . After about 6 months of hard use every single 395 I've ran is a pain to start . If you can't get the job done with a 390 then to me you need to stay home because your not a timber cutter

My 394 has seen its share of mill duty. It has zero issues starting. Only time it did was when the coil was pooping out. Let it cool and it would lite back up. Replaced it an been bulletproof ever since.

After about 6 months hard use logging it’s time to replace the plug. I do on all our logging saws and no issues starting. If a good running saw or leaf blower suddenly gets hard to start 90% time it’s the plug in my experiences. Simple maintenance. That said I would rather pack a 390xp over a 660/395/661 for a felling/logging saw. They handle better to me. Milling or long bar work stumping 395 or 9010 if you can find one.

Maintenance is always kept up on my equipment . Saws blown out daily or at least every other day . Still yet to see a 395 that ya don't darn near gotta sling to start ! If you guys are having better luck , hey that's great !

And when I say saws blown out , I'm not talking about just the air filter . Starter rope assembly is removed , bar cover / side cover removed , etc and blown out thoroughly . I cut no corners with my equipment

Maintenance on any piece of equipment is cheap insurance.

800 hrs on oil and filter changes on off road big trucks is not good maintenance.
Maybe that's why a Cummings locked up under the plant this summer at work..

Clean saws-good oil and real gas will keep saws running along time.

If your having issues starting the 395, I’d make sure the tank vent is holding pressure. That green elbow is prone to pop out or leak. I’ve had 2 new OEM replacement rear handle/tanks that wouldn’t build pressure out of the box. Husqvarna says 5PSI. A more reliable option would be to remove the tank vent and run a piece of fuel line in and put an Echo bell shaped tank vent on.

The tank vent not building pressure doesn’t affect the saw, just leaks fuel. I used 3 bond to hold in the last 385 tank vent that kept falling out. On the other hand... the tank vent building too much pressure is what affects running.

How you make fuel go up hill with no pressure round eye?
Carb diaphragm is the fuel pump. Fuel filter is submerged in gas. Explain to me how the 385 ran just fine with the tank vent fallen out? Just leaked gas when fueled up, which was annoying.
