I usually set those where the outer metal casing of the seal is just below the beveled opening on the case, about 1/16" or so.

You want to make sure the inner lip of the seal has good purchase on the straight shoulder of the crank.

There's a special setting tool from Husqvarna that sets the seal at about 1/16".

lol its a jred 2188 or a red 390. i looked through the special tools for the 390 and the 2188 it doesnt list a seal tool. i found a seal tool for a 372 that looks like it will work to at least start it. it goes around the lip on the top i bought one to try it. would that be the same tool for the 390?
thank you

I'm with @jacob j.

Set the seal in at the base of the bevel. Alternatively... measure the distance from the top of the bevel on the case to the bearings....let's say it's 10mm... the subtract the thickness of the seal...say... 5mm. So then drive it just shy of 5mm deep....about 4.5mm so the rubber part of the seal is just off the inner race of the bearing

this is how far the seal driver for the 372 puts it. It looks good and doesnt appear to be messed up in any way the crank turns real nice and free its all the way on to the flat part past the notch. should i put it further in?20210601_205306.jpg 20210602_135227.jpg

It’s deep enough as long as the outer lip of the seal rides completely on the larger diameter of the crank and not hanging over the lip. As long as it clears the fw

On the 372’s this is exactly what it looks like as well, 1/16 below the end of the taper
