Sooooo you comin down this weekend to do some cutting with your dubya?
Not sure what if any plans are in place for this weekend. I should really see about getting the steering box out of the plow truck so I can swap out the pitman arm pretty soon ...fun

Nice job on the build.

Did you advance the timing at all?

I also think the lower ring woulda been fine, but like Brad said, you pick up significant rpm without it.

Saws with larger ports 4 stroke at higher rpm, generally. When you lay the bar in wood, you may be very surprised which saw chews it up better. I'm betting your saw pulls a longer bar better.

Didn't advance the timing yet. I had too much timing before with the XT top end and this project began with resetting the flywheel and snow balled into porting and swapping the cylinders...lol. I will be giving it some advance before cutting again.

Thanks for the compliment on how it runs. I'm quite happy with it, pulls good rpm in the wood.

Advanced the timin a bit and made a few cookies. Tuned the saw near the edge at 14k and it held a slight 4 stroke between cuts but it was getting close to not enough fuel. That dang hard maple makes white ash feel like butter. Anyway, it was holding 12k in the cut with normal pressure and running pretty good. I don't think the saw really needed the timing advance so I have since put it back. I gotta hit my chain again, my raker height is a little too low for wood that hard, with a burl in it no less.

Yeah you can hear the 4-stroking slowly fade away between cuts as she got heated up good... Feckin hard maple! LOL! Sounds damn good though!

That ain't no joke. That's some hard stuff! But the "W" chewed it up nicely in my opinion:)

Very nice thread, been enjoying it, now my email alerts are working again, so I can stay updated. Great build! 254xp coming soon, I hope!lol
Thanks Dustin, this build was particularly satisfying for me because I did everything at once and I didn't have to pull the top end 5 more times to get the performance I wanted. Probably won't be building another saw for a while since it's time to start working my saws, gotta get muh wood done. When I do get tinkering again that 254XP is my #1 pick for a build. It will still be there on the parts shelf. Your 254 really got me wanting another classic saw, looks very strong for its size.
