What makes the 372 EPA different. I see two rings instead of one and a different carb. Is that it? Will swapping out the EPA carb get you anything?

OK I'll take a stab. This is probably not 100% accurate but here goes. I believe all of the OE 372's had a two ring piston from the factory. The single ring pistons were on the 371. As far as an EPA model the only thing I'm aware of would be limiter caps on the carb but they've been that way for a long time. Walbro HD 12 is the standard carb for all 372's up to the X torq which has a RWJ 4 carb that's actually bigger than the HD 12.

Hope this helps and please feel free to correct me fellas.

Makes sense..

And I would add that a CAT muffler is NOT part of it. My XPW made in 2010 has a hollow can for a muffler, not even a baffle. Same is true of my brother's 2013 XT.

I'm kind of surprised by that too. Brother bought his NE346 before I got mine. His has the green fuel cap and a CAT muffler, mine does not.

Seems as though some models ended up with CAT mufflers and others didn't. I wonder if the product line gained some EPA "credits" with the AT saws added and other models discontinued and if that is the reason the 372 has not yet been saddled with a CAT muffler???

Ok, so when did the 372 change from wide rings 1.5 m/m to narrow rings 1.2 m/m, I ordered a set of rings for a year 2000 372 not knowing there were two sizes, I got the wide rings, come to put them on the piston, the ring grooves were narrow and I had to order another set of rings, this is the 50m/m piston.

Sounds like a question for @SawTroll.

I was not aware of the different ring sizes... Narrow for OE and wide for XT possibly???? Bore is the same between the two, but the pistons are quite different.
