So I was tightening the bar on 372 xt today and one of the bolts broke off pretty much flush with the outside cover. Not enough bolt left to get a nut started. How involved is it to replace the bolt? Thanks.

Those bolts go in from the oil tank. Use a punch and tap it into an empty oil tank and then fish it out. Replace with a new bolt. I use a big set of hemostats to get it started in the hole and to keep the square back straight into the slot. Then add some washers and a nut and pull the new stud out.

Thanks Dan. 1- empty the oil tank. 2- Take a punch and knock the broken bolt back into the oil tank and fish out. 3- Insert new bolt into the slot thru the oil tank. #3 sounds like the hardest part

A hemostat is a set of small ratcheting pliers, like the docs use to pinch off stuff when they operate on you. Heck, a pic would work better. If you have steady hands, a small extendable magnet will work as well.

Thanks again Dan. Just watched a video where a guy used fishing line attached to the old bolt, knocked it thru and then attached the line to the new bolt and pulled it back thru the oil tank.

Just another heads up. The head of the bolt inside of the oil tank is rectangular and goes into a rectangular shaped pocket. When you install the new bolt, make sure to have it orientated properly. Good Luck!

They are in the mail. Above is correct, long side parallel with bottom of case. Long pair of forceps (aka hemostats) is a must have chainsaw tool.

Seems like I was able to do this a few times without a hemostat as shown above, but believe me, it was a PITA. I think I used a foot long steel wire that I bent around the square end to hold it as I positioned the bolt through the tank opening. I've used one of these occasionally for cylinder bolts when rebuilding top ends. Anyway, that works when needle nose pliers fail.
