It's a fair bit of modification. I ran one with the big carb at Hedgerow's last Fall and it's the fastest saw I've run, but not just because of the huge carb.;)
The few saws I've put bigger carbs on gained nothing.

Don't rule out the stock carb from the 359. Once you get the metering seat drilled out to match the size in the EL-48 and open up the main nozzle a tad bit (re: Randy's EL carb mod thread) it'll make your eyes pop.

(Hi .... I'm the voice of 'what if' in the back of the room) ..... I'd LOVE to see a stock comparison between a 346XP, an MS260 and a Shindaiwa 488.

Yup, really.
I don't have one here, but the 346 would have its hands full with a 488. Too close to call

488 will eat a 260. This I know. Yup, really
