You will be fine unless you get it ported. Then i would go with a three shoed clutch
Oh well.

I have a ported 261 going together right now with the 2 shoe.

What are your thoughts on timing advance on this model? Have you fellows been doing it or not?

I can't get a straight answer on this one.

I might have lucked out, don't know yet. The 261 has a dished piston, but this piston looks like its flat. The cylinder walls are smooth and the piston looks great, but I'm still confused about the piston. How dished is it? Noticeably? How can you tell the difference? I guess I'll pull the jug and inspect the piston. Anybody got a pic of a 261 piston so I can compare? Anyway, cover bolt hole in the case by the muffler completely broke out of the case, can i put an insert and JB weld it in?

Its a very noticable dish Tom. Sounds like you lucked out and already have a 262 piston. I can get you a pic shortly.

The saw i did had that same cover bolt all wollered out from those lumpy cam husky vibes. I drilled it out and JB'ed a nut into the case and used a machine screw to secure it. Worked like a charm. You could also tap it out to a larger size if you have enough metal. Mine was basically a huge oval hole where the bolt just ate the case from jiggling around

I did not advance timing on mine. They run real snarly with just ports widened and no base gasket. Mine was ported and the two shoe clutch worked fine.

I'll probably put a new ring on it John. Save the new meteor piston I bought for another 262. Can't get enough of them.

I do have 2 spare 87 carbs that I'll put 1 on a mahle jug to get ported. Or a KS jug, which one is better for port work?

Video loading to YouTube.

Tough to find adjusment screws.

Saw is too fat at first, then too lean, then just right.

Unloaded rpm 13,400. That's all it wants to go. I bet it's 11,000 in wood.

Ha! Look at that comp gauge! Prolly needs a popup now too!

When I built mine I didn't have a good decomp so I just plugged it. I ended up putting on a big D handle from a snow machine to start it. I never checked compression but it was stout. It didn't rev real high, but boy it didn't need to either. I miss that saw. Traded it for renting a cattle trailer. Stupid.
