I ported a 254 a few years ago and it's still my go to firewood saw. I've cut and cut with it and it just plain rocks. In fact the ugly duckling and I are cutting more this weekend. :)

I've owned a few 257's too, great saws too, but they aren't a 254. :)

I was with XP_Slinger at the dealer and saw both saws as well, they are in nice shape. Kind of cool to see not one but two older saws for sale there at the same time, they don't have stuff like that very often. Didn't they say they had another 257 about to hit the floor as well?

But you know what you need to get, a 394 project so we can do a Braapp Shack build-off, 394 style! Let Moose get the 254

I never told you guys what they were asking for those saws and I'd like your opinions for the future. They had $225 on the 257 and $265 on the 254XP. Seems fair, but not a smoking deal to me. Thoughts, opinions?

If !!! you can find a 254 that isnt a total basket case here then £200-250 is what i would expect to pay in a bidding war. I sold 1 a year ago to a friend (cheeper than i wanted) for that sort of money. Dollar to Sterling you can work out .

the price seems fair for a nice running example, and the 254 is worth a tad more then one 257, we get them cheaper in Norway, but that is only because people prefer 550, sadly.....
Both share the same style AV and fuel tank unlike what we have on 262.
Personally I prefer 254, conrod is shorter, jug & top cover a tad lower, result is a tad more distance from front handle bar to top cover who make it a better toned body for limbing work.

I "Think so" Iv never been inside a real early one to see first hand . Spec shows no difference on the bore or stroke from the start to finish . The cylinders can be KS or Mahle and later ones had a de comp.
except 242, 254 has always been the Husky model that made me super interested in those classic 2xx serie saws.

Its a funny saw to study, started with two different KS, Mahle, Mahle decomp, KS decomp, Mahle decomp and probleby a hand different jugs in that mix as well.

The golden one to grab if you crave for torque is the one labeled 86, thin ring piston, it has a very little combustion chamber, 15th gasket is what you need, and voila, mine with thin ring piston has 215 psi. Luckily I got two of them and they go nowhere :D

Now you come to mention it Tor..I had a 154 se which i think had the 1mm ring and small combustion chamber. Do you figure the first 254 had the same set up for a yr or two ? Of corse i dont know if the 154 was as from the factory

first 1 year and a few months is where you find the thin ring piston in 254 Simon, SG 7390091 SE 7400209.
If I remember correct they had a more fat gasket, its the only 254 jug who has squish clearance enough to go free, no one hate a jug who blow 200+ psi without machine work :D

@rattler told me lots of modds for 254, when I get health again to play with chainsaws those 254's will probleby be one of my favourite.
