Whats new on the work boot scene?
Good day farmchuck,
Lotta busy, odd job stuff. Finished milling some spruce for a 10x20 cabin tent deck. Drove 8 hrs south, did a giant stump job down here in south anchorage. Still removing wood rubble from the stump. Top soil and grass seed later today. Then driving 1.5 hr north to a residential clearcut I did last year. Grabbing some slabs I milled last year and trucking them to hope, Alaska for counter tops and outdoor tables.

Mostly wearing the georgia boots for the drive/stump job. Carolinas for the 10x20 cabin tent deck, chippewas for scouting a gold claim. Wearing the danner loggers today to load up 32"x16 ft x 3"slabs and the drive south to unload.

Milled slabs delivered, then spread top soil and grass seed over the giant 6 ft stump removal.
Mostly wore the georgia low heel loggers.

Just returned from the 8 hr road trip. Glad to be back in the country again! Those suburbia priks drive like psychos down in Los Anchorage.

Next few days will be gathering all the firewood Ive bucked. Will probably wear the thorogoods with the 1100 carbides because everything is slippery from the rains.

Monday I start running excavator at the gold mine, filling wash plant with pay dirt. Most certainly wear the timberlands with the fire and ice tread. Hoping to cut a bunch of trees falling in the mine pit. I don't make a very good cab lizard. So hopefully bossman let's me do some saw work to stretch out. Sitting in an excavator for 9 hrs ain't nowhere near as nice as runnin saws!

All these little odd jobs are adding up! A timber lease ain't cheap. Everything helps.

I tried the camel city mill socks about a year ago. I absolutely love them, they are the only socks I wear now.

I just bought a couple pairs to try. They fit and feel well, but they are not as thick/cushioned as the Darn Toughs I've been wearing the last few years. I'm still undecided on whether I will switch to them, having only worn them a couple of days. I got the over-the-calf tall boot sock, and they do stay up well even with pull-on boots that usually "eat" most socks. Price is comparable, and Darn Tough offers a "lifetime" warranty while Camel City offers a ten-year warranty. If I actually got ten years out of a pair of socks, I'd be ashamed to try to warranty them ;) so the warranty difference seems immaterial. :)

I had some of the darn tough and noble best dang work socks I tried before camel city.
Both were to thick and didn't wick moisture as good for me anyway.
It's like everything else, personal preference.

That's for certain. I prefer thicker socks, even in warm weather, with the leather boots logger-style boots I wear 95% of the time. Some folks really like GoreTex boots, but I wholeheartedly despise them. Might as well be wearing ziplock bags on my feet. It's good to have choices, even if it takes a while to figure out what works best.

It's good to have different work socks. Every boot is different. Every foot is different. I got thin, medium and thick socks.

For example: The timberland loggers definitely need a thick sock. The chippewas too.

You're right. I only wear the same type lace-up boots most of the time, and only have a couple pair of pull-on boots that I wear occasionally, so I don't have a wide variety of footwear and socks. One of the advantages of getting older is that you can figure out what works for you, in your environment, and stick with it. It makes things more simple that way.

A lifetime of working on my feet has left me with definite opinions - for example, low heels or wedge soles KILL my lower back. But I also recognize not everyone or every situation is the same, so I'm always interested in other folks' experiences in subjects that appeal to me. I find your boot experiment very interesting and applaud you for taking the time to update as time goes on.

I like the darn tough socks. Just very expensive
They are expensive. I've always bought mine on the 25% off sales that run occasionally, but even then they aren't cheap. But they work well for me and they last very well, so for me they're worth the cost.
