We I was a kid, we had slot car tracks and cars. We would take a few wraps off the windings in the motors to make the cars faster. I wonder......

Same thing here with the old school AFX, Tyco, and eventually TCR (Total Control Racing; ability to change lanes without track slots) race sets. The ol' TCR Racing Rigs set was the *s-wordt back in those days.

I had slot cars … heck, I still have em, but no place to race em!

The speed tricks I remember: I think we got 3 V engines for a 12 V track.

We replaced the brass axel bushing with ball bearings (made a noticeable difference).

We experimented with all kinds of different tires, and sanding techniques!

Yup, we'd hot rod those AFX cars too. Good stuff for 10- 12 year olds back in the day. The Tyco's seemed fast enough and we though too cheaply built to mess with. I still have a bunch of those cars and both brands of track in boxes in the basement along with a ton of model railroad stuff. I always wanted to integrate the slot cars and trains, just never got around to it.

We used to run Globe DC Motors from a Cadillac convertible tops in our 1/24th scale slot cars.
