042av to 046

I have an 042av. The engine model is 1128. The bore is 49mm and the stroke is 36mm. Is it possible to install an 046 piston and cylinder on it? The 046 has a 53mm bore and 36mm stroke. And the 046 is an 1128 model engine. Thanks.

The 042 is part of the 1117 family series. I believe the 042 uses a 13mm wrist pin whereas the 046 uses a 12mm, the bolt spacing is much different, and the way ports lay out is also different. Your best bet would be to locate an 048 top end, which would be a bolt-and-go for your 042.

As JJ said they are two totally different saws. The 042/048 was not a popular saw and most parts have been. NLA for years.

There are many theories why the 042/048 series were short lived .Never the less parts for these are in short supply .I might add though it was an 048 I bought from a Stihl dealer from Oregon state via E-bay that had a spun main bearing .I saved it and it got be interested in restoration .As for the saw it runs great although I seldom use it .

I have a real soft spot for the 042, my father, when he was a Stihl dealer in the late 1970's brought an ex demonstrator one from Stihl and this was the saw I always remember him using to get our household firewood through my growing up years. My older brother eventually sold it and replaced it with an 036 which Dad hated because it didn't have the torque of the 042. Anyway, long story short, I found a really tidy one recently and handed it to Dad to use when we were out getting wood together. Here he is using it, he's in his mid 70's and enjoying every moment!

I ran an 048 1 much 1 winter and then some. 1 of my favorite saws of all time. Preferred it over the 056 series for versatility handling it all day in different size wood. I was using it for my big saw falling and bucking the trunks of big dead oaks into firewood. The 042,s I ran didn't feel much behind.

It's been said the 048 in it's day was the highest HP per weight ratio of any saw of that time period .Some of the early models used slotted head screws instead of torx heads .It's been said that type of fastener could lead to case leaks .On my two 048's and one 042 I've replaced those with torx heads .

It could be about the time the 048 was dropped from the line up that the 038 mag came out .I'd have to check the dates because I don't know .The mag with 72 cc compaired to 76 for the 048 should produce about the same power and it stayed until it could not pass epa regulations . However at some time the 044 and 046 came out so whatever happened remains kind of a mystery .What I do know is that all of those models were good cutters .
