OK, So I was watching a video of a guy doing a 029 to a 039 conversion. He was using a Cross pop up piston as well as the cylinder. Is there a place where I can do some research and get my hands on one? My local pawn shop has a 029 that runs but is in need of a bit of freshen up. I was at Cross website and shot off an email but I have not heard back from them. This was now over a week ago.Any information wood be appreciated. Thanks, Ken

They run really well when all done up. The cross cyl isn't bad. The exhaust port is kinda narrow but it opens up easily. Have done a few and I would compare them to a stock 365/372 husky power wise when modded. Only drawback is the oiler sucks and they empty the fuel tank in a hurry when modded. Especially if you put a 044 carb on it.

I’m here now.
I’ve done quite a few 039s and 029,MS310 conversions but never used an aftermarket cylinder.
OEM 039 are timed pretty decent, biggest variable is squish. Get you a tight one and widen the ports, advance the timing and open the muffler and you’ll be happy.

I’ve done 1 conversion. Went from 029 to an 039 with the Cross popup. Both were oem cylinders. The ported popup 039 ended up about twice as fast. The air filter didn’t want to flow enough air after port work

I've built a pile of them. OEM, cross and hyway cylinders. The one hyway cylinder is still the strongest runner of the bunch. I agree with Kevin they really need a better filtration setup especially after porting. Dirty filters are a problem and I've had a few guys complain about it. There is a thread on here about the cross piston and various mods.

Although I've built up a bunch of 039 engines (usually Huztle parts) I've never done a domed/popup piston. However, I do have one in stock and that will be the next one. I have a serviceable oem 49mm cylinder that I'll use.

I put a Hyway 390 cylinder with a pop up together. Just waiting for a donor saw that wont cost me $200. The last 290 that I converted over and put a pop up in was a real strong runner.

I've done a few of the 039/390 pop up piston swaps. I always *b-word out the spot that pushes into the jug that someone pointed out under the muffler. I usually do a bit of smoothing widening to ports with a good muff mod. These saws are kinda the 4 door Buick of the saw world but if treated decent they will cut tons of wood.
