Looks like this 028 Super injested something that it couldn't digest. Passed a pressure and vac test so I pulled the carb to rebuild it. I had looked at the exhaust side of the piston and decided to check out the intake side once the carb was off. I saw a destroyed spring looking back at me. It was the spring from the air filter that keeps the flap pulled back while running. I guess this cylinder is toast now. Sucks because it is nice other than the gouges below the intake.IMG_20170122_182049385.jpg IMG_20170122_181811689_HDR.jpg

Obviously if you are selling it I would let them know. But it shouldn't effect anything and for a work saw, why buy a new jug just so it looks good where no one even can see???

The rings don't go there. Just the piston skirt. I'd clean it up, smooth it out if need be, and pop a new piston in there. Should run like new!
I was thinking that, but wasn't sure it would be a good idea or not. I have never done any grinding on cylinders and am not sure what the proper method would be to get it smoothed out properly. If anyone wants to throw a few pointers out on how to make it right, I have your attention.

They are NOS and he wants $225 each... I would be upside down in it for that kind of $. A running 028 Super doesn't sell for much more than that.
Yeah, I've got a really nice one advertised here in GA for $260 with a practically new bar/chain on it. I would just go with an aftermarket cylinder kit if it was me. That's quite a bit of damage to the cylinder to run it. I guess you'd only be risking a piston though...

I dug through the parts only section, albeit quickly, and didn't see anything. I may have missed it. I used the search function, but it leaves a bit to be desired...

@fearofpavement I hear you on that. I always stand behind whatever saws I sell. When it leaves, I make sure it is right. I don't want to ever see it again unless they just want me to do a tune up. I have only ever had two ever come back. Both times were carb related and took about 15 minutes to fix.

I would start with 120 grit sandpaper. All you need to do is eliminate any thing protruding into the jug, any raised edges if it's flush or below the skirt will span it, no different than a port. If the plating is raised it may take a Dremel with a carbide. Should be pretty easy.

As a rule for what it's worth if it's below the ring travel a low spot won't hurt you .A high spot can break the surface tension of the oil film and cause all kinds of problems .

Thanks guys. I was secretly hoping to hear what you all have been saying. I know you all well enough now to expect to be enlightened as to whether or not the cylinder could be saved without actually asking. Thanks to you all for staying true to form. I will do some creative polishing on this cylinder and put this one back into service. Once again, I thank you all.
