Ok so I have a 026 with a 44mm bore that needs a new piston. I was wondering if anyone had played around with fitting different pistons in this saw. I was kinda thinking about the 028 44mm woodboss piston with the factory dome? I've gotta order a piston anyway may as well order the one that makes the most fun.

Nothing's gonna work. Use an 026 piston.

028 piston has longer skirts, but a much higher and much more arced dome. It also has less compression height. Milling the dome flat, unlike the 026 piston, is gonna result in a giant hole in the piston crown.

I tried a husky 44mm flat top piston too (?142). No good there either.

If you do a search, @Brewz did a thread on this. Someone more knowledgable than I posted pics of multiple 44mm pistons. Nothing else will work, period. (And do I ever hate to make a comment like this and I hope I'm proven wrong).

What about taking that 028 dome and milling the squish band flat and leaving the center for a pop up?
I didn't read the other thread about what other reasons make it not work. If it is something else then please be quick on the answer or I'll go insomniac and end up out in my shop at 3am pulling a friggin woodboss jug to start poking the piston at an 026 jug. Lol

Yeah we went right into this and a few of us now have a few useless pistons sitting around gathering dust.

In other models it can be done but I am with @drf255 on this one.

Use a good Meteor or OEM 026 piston

+1 for me. I've done more than I can count. This advice is rock solid!

Well I guess I will go to my dealer and price a piston. It's a shame that nothing else will work tho. @jmssaws about how much did you cut squish by and to everyone else who has messed with these what would be some good numbers to shoot for?

Also should I be looking for a 44.7mm top end and put my money towards that rather than a new piston?

If you have a good 44mm jug, it would be cheaper to go that route. Both Al and Jason have made good running saws with 44mm top ends.

Thank God for stihls lowered piston prices ordered a 44mm piston from my dealer. It's gonna cost $33 plus tax. Can't beat that. Hopefully it will be here before the end of the week.

Somehow my dealer must not have gotten the memo. Each time I check on a OEM piston it's "three-prices".
Meteor seems to be the go-to replacement as far as price. Anyone know a rhyme or reason behind this?

Well I have two stihlerships within a 5 minute drive from each other. So competition might have something to do with it.
