I always thought the difference between the two was the oiler? Fixed oiler has no cutout (026s and 260s) and the adjustable oiler has the cutouts (260 PROs).
I thought 261s all had adjustable oilers.
Adjustable oiler is a bit taller than the fixed oiler.

yeah thats it.. i was machining the thicker (top) one down to the thinner ( bottom) one.

Haven’t dived into 261’s yet, but I’ve got 3 of them here to do.

The 026 and USA made MS260’s both came with the PRO adjustable oil pump and the fixed pump. The fixed pumps were metal in the earlier 026 and then became plastic with a metal pump insert. The adjustable are all metal.

Converting to the adjustable pump requires the different pump, a sleeve and crank washer, the worm gear and the adjustable pump clutch drum which not only has the drive notch, it is also deeper to engage the worm gear. I’ve never tried to use the deeper drum on the fixed pump. It may work with either.

I used to search high and low for adjustable pumps for 026’s. There is zero wrong with the standard pump and it oils better in most cases. I’m not sure if the adjustable pump can be modded to flow more though.

I grease my 261 needle fairly often but find you only want to use the minimal amount as 99.99% of what you put on ends up on the inside of the drum. Anyone have a link or part no of a aftermarket clutch drum with 'small' spline not 'micro/mini' spline?? Does Oregon or even China-ebay sell them?

I have one. I will check and see if a Stihl rim fits on the Oregon sprocket.

You are correct. The Oregon sprocket will not fit the Stihl micro spline rim. Rats.

I took a pic of the Oregon sprocket and rim. And a Stihl micro rim.

This box part number is for the old style fixed oiler 026s.

I bought a few of those metal cased bearings to try. They look pretty stout. I removed the OEM plastic cased bearing. It has been used for a couple of years. It looked brand new.
But I installed the KOYO metal cased bearing in my MOFO 026.

My after market bearing that came with clutch looks like a koyo.its a metal cage bearing.ive been thinking that im not so sure about grease and o rings.i would think that much grease could get out and get in clutches and cause possible slipping.the more i think of this.

There's a lot of them stories out there concerning the 261, but the majority of those failures were probably caused by crew hands that didn't give a crap. All ya gotta do is grease that bearing occasionally (and don't over-tighten the chain) and most will survive for quite a while. But its a PITA to yank the drum, clean all the parts in solvent and regrease them every few tanks and replace the chintzy china bearing every 20 tanks or so... so it don't get done.

Stihl still hasn't provided a way to grease that bearing with a needle greaser (like Husky did) yet. And they won't because they sell many more crankshafts when paired up with their soft china needle bearings with plastic cages.

The aftermarket provides far better bearings for that drum than OEM, so its the first mod I do on all my needle bearing clutch drum equipped saws. I've been adding o-rings for years now too, to each side of the drum to help to hold in clean grease longer and keep the fines out of the bearing. Its still a PITA, but its the only cheap and effective way to get out of their trick-bag, IMO.

I never looked up the dimensions for an 044 drum bearing, but its likely one of the major bearing manufacturers make one to fit. Scrounge around the net and buy one. I only bought the high quality Koyo bearing for my 261 because it was cheap and easy to find. Ironically it was made in Germany... Stihl could'a done that too, for the same price as china plastic...
Link to that bearing please!

So I'm confused does the 261 use the micro rims or the small?

OEM Stihl uses micro spline proprietary sprocket.
Oregon AM uses a standard small spline. I bought an Oregon .325-7, and I just bought 3/8-7 to go with it in case I make the switch. [emoji106]

Thanks. I have the .325-7 and 8 and 3/8 -7 for my mofo. So I'm locked in the micro for now.

Same here. But I have a backup for longterm protection. Lol
Nothing wrong with the microspline. They are plentiful.
