I'm very interested in this too, from the little research I've done my 'guess' is that if you get a late MS260 Pro clutch drum with the 2 little oil worm gear cutouts, it should work. The whole reason this is such a good question is it means if you swap the ms261 drum with a ms260 drum you ditch the need to use expensive hard to source Stihl 'micro' rim sprockets & be able to use regular small spline ones. I think the later ms260 drum could work but the earlier 026 drum won't as it has no oiler cutouts to drive oil pump in it. Definitely subbed and curious to find out the facts on this issue.

I have used some 1121s drums on 1141 machines.
No Problems.
But only use the newer ones with the cutout.
Its the same with the 1143 and 1123 drums.
The 1/4" sprocket for 1143s is the old 1123 drum and all others are 1143 sprockets in the IPL.
So why should the 1123 1/4" sprocket work and the 1123 3/8"P not?

Good information! Do you know if the later MS260 drums have the regular small spline size or if they use the same 'micro/mini' size spline??

You can use every 1121 drum/sprocket with cutout for the oilpump gear on a MS 261.
Same for 1143 and 1123.

The part dimensions are all the same and the rims for the MS260/026 and MS261.

026 / MS 260 /MS 261/270/271/280/291 = 1121 drums/sprockets with cutout for the wormgear and any 1141 drum/sprocket

017 / 018 /019 / MS 170/171/180/181/190/210/211/230/241/231/250/251 = any 1123 or 1143 drum/sprocket will fit

And all these saws have the same small rims.

Thats what was driving me me crazy cuz the part numbers were diff.for 026/260 with adjustable oilers to 261 but called for same oiler and bearing for all 3 models thanx.

... and you can upgrade the chintzy plastic OEM needle bearing with a KOYO 10x13x10 w/hardened steel cage for about the same price as the useless one that chews crankshafts:
Koyo 10x13x10H

The tolerances and the finish on the needles are way better, the cage is steel with a lot more space for grease and the needle bearings themselves are longer than the soft china needles, so much better load handling capacity with loads spread out over a wider area on the end of the crank.

Its a drop-in bearing. You can add o-rings to each side of the drum to help it hold grease longer and keep the fines out too.

Good info. I like Japanese KOYO bearings, I always use them when replacing crank bearings. I always thought the MS260 used a regular 'small' spline size not the 'micro' size?? From what has been said, I must be wrong?

Thanx good info.does koyo make the bigger bearings for say 044 as well.?i actually had this happen on a 261 saw for a guy it ruined the crank.had to buy used oem crank and split case.

I always thought the difference between the two was the oiler? Fixed oiler has no cutout (026s and 260s) and the adjustable oiler has the cutouts (260 PROs).
I thought 261s all had adjustable oilers.
Adjustable oiler is a bit taller than the fixed oiler.

All ms261's I've seen have had adjustable oilers. Are the clutch drums in those pics MICRO spline or regular Small?

Good question. Lol
I think they are Stihl's version proprietary micro spline. Whatever the OEM 026s are.
I sold the top one because all my 026s are fixed.

It dont matter if you use the one with the notch on a non adjustable oiler.you just cant go the other way of course.

I tried the taller sprocket with the groove on my 026. It didn't fit right. Was hitting something and didn't seat right. Just as easy to use the right one. [emoji106]
