I went to another workbase to layout a pole barn for them. Of course I was checking out their "junk" pile and found a 024AV in it. I asked what was wrong with it and they said it wouldn't hit a lick. I checked the spark and that is the problem. I didn't diagnose it further, but did pull the muffler to check the piston and cylinder. The saw has some use but it looks pretty good inside from what I can see. I threw it in my trailer and locked it up.

I assume the coil is bad since they said they tried a new plug.l and it didn't work. They let the dealer talk them into not fixing it so it went in the trash. I'm going to haul it off for them so I can snag it for myself!

Are these saws pretty good? I'm looking for a small saw for my son and was going to get a 170 for him for Christmas, but I may clean this one up since it is an older saw.

Thanks

Nice saw, America’s platform as the 026. Don’t go overboard on bar length and it will run circles around an ms170. Air filters are hard to find.

Is the same filter as an 026?

No, I believe the regular 024 saws had their own filter. It’s smaller than the 026 filters. Hard to find might not be accurate, expensive would be a better way to put it.

I'm going to bring it home next week and see what it needs. It is a pretty clean saw. I think he would be ecstatic about it. Only my 8 year old would want a saw for Christmas!

Only picture I have. I added mesh since the flocking wore off. I'll be removing all of the flocking when time permits IMG_0086.JPG I don't think there are aftermarket ones. They seem to be around $35 on eBay.

There a very good small saw so worth trying to get at the right price in the right condition IMO.
The earlier 024 av saws with this cover form will usually have the sort of filter shown above.

The 024 av then finally turned into the MS 240 with the compensating carb and had the high covers with the bigger filter that is easy to get now.

Is FREE a good price? I am definitely getting it, just didn't know about parts availability. Will a 026 coil work? I have an extra.

Free is very good, and an 026 coil will work. A lot of parts cross between the 024 and 026 and are plentiful.
Good, I have a "box o parts" 026 and one that needs work. I would have snagged some pics but I didn't want to show my excitement! Hopefully that is the problem.

Is the same filter as an 026?

The 024 is a good choice over the plastic 170. The filter is not the same as the 026 -- though the 024 is a solid saw. There are tons of coils available out there. Used is not a bad option.

Yes the 026 coil will work.
I am aware there are differences in the USA spec saws and the Euro ones so figured I would hear about it one way or the other .

I sold a Stihl 024 AV that I restored and rebuilt two years about for $190 with a spare chain. The owner has encountered some major health problems and wants me to buy it back from him. Unfortunately, he hardly ever used it.

That's my birthday present to myself next month.
