I would drain tank and clean carb first. Use non-ethanol fuel in mix. Get rid of old fuel in can first Boss. Remember to check fuel lines, impulse line, intake boot, and primer for leaks. (If it has primer bulb)

I agree, I would think it is more likely the module itself is the problem. Without physically seeing the wiring and/or schematic it's really speculation.

Try chasing the threads, see if thread chaser is loose as well

What is the air gap that you used?

Sure could, same effect as a power surge that damages electronics.
