That's a good question. I was starting to wonder if a bigger saw, he can handle, may give him the fun factor and entice his interest more.

Odd ,but I'd suggest an older model like a 10-10 ,XL-12, or (Blue) Super EZ. The basic fundamentals of motors are all right there to learn and old is cool!

Get him one of each brand, so he doesn't grow up to become picky or whine when handed a brand he doesn't like.

Echo CS361-p....the rear handled version of the 355T. I just bought one and they are great little saws. Basically the same saw as the Stihl MS201 but without spring AV. Super light little saw.

Also consider what you have already for bars and chains in your inventory.
Generally speaking different saws require different bars/chain dl counts, etc.
Can't really go wrong with a small Stihl MS170, MS180.
But 50cc is a saw he can grow into. Standard bar mount 026/261 up to 066/660/661.

I am in the middle of nowhere and always find free saws.
I get them running and test them cutting for a while before selling them
1 load away from finishing my wood for the year the the 4 saws I was using I will sell.
This batch has a Poulan Husky and Stihl
Muff mod timing advance on the Poulan and it runs great and cuts surprisingly well for the saw it is, free from the dump.
The husky 51 was a throw in on a pile of old saws I bought, needed a chain brake,muff mod and tune
The Stihl 026 was a freebie from a friend that is a husky guy, needed a recoil, came muff modded.
Cut 10 real cords of wood no issues with any of them.
Should get about $600 for the 3 of them. Zero investment other than time and parts from my bone pile

If going with a clamshell saw, Husky 440 all the way. Put a 16" X-Force bar and chain on it, tune it right, and you have a very capable saw that is easy to work on and parts are cheap. I got mine with very low hours for $175.00 in a pawn shop and love it.

My son's first saw was Husqvarna 550xp mark 1. He is strong with large hands. I think a Husqvarna 543xp is a great saw to start with. A friend of mine started his son out with a Sthil 201 rear handle always remember time and patience goes a long way. Setting him up for success is the best way to get started.

261 would be sweet. Not wanting to get in too deep with this first saw until I see how his business works out.

He’s 13 and attention span is mighty short.

Used 026, 260 or 261 $145, $175, $100 respectively all in running shape just need to keep an eye out for the right deals, I have to ADMIT THE $100 261 did need a new chain and the antivibe on the bar mount needed reattached which took all about 10minutes including the new chain.

I’m a husky guy. But the 026 mentioned in my opinion would be a good choice. Small and enough power to cut firewood. I like those saws. I started with a wild thing poulan. Still have it but the vibes suck. An 026 would never become useless. I carry that or usually a husky 55 in my truck. The 55 I have pulls hard when starting. Might not be the best choice. A 345 husky would be another good one. Should be able to find one for a decent price. All 3 good saws. Those are the three I know about. There’s plenty of other options but those are saws that will last that I have and like
