036 Elastostart

Not bad for 30+ years of service. It got tired of 220 psi.

Had a new one here. Too bad these aren’t repairable, and they ain’t getting any cheaper.

Check with your Stihl local dealer. Both of my dealers have all three diameters on hand. As long as the stretchy rubber part is ok, it’s a cheap fix. $3ish

.
Check your local dealer. They should have all 3 diameters

Nah, premade carbides off eBay. I suck at grinding HSS.
Wait? Did I just ask you for a pic of your tool? Please no. Lol

So do I. I may give it another shot. I watched a video on how to sharpen recently. It was very informative. At least I better understand how the angles and the radius effect cutting.

Elastostart is repairable, but it is a PITA to do, and if your cord is worn out likely your handle is also worn out (I have had both fail), so it just pays to get a new cord w/handle.

The rubber stretch part on my 044 just failed a few weeks ago, the cord was in tact so I could still start it, but I installed a replacement cord/handle. I've owned that saw since new (12/92) and the handle/cord was original. The base gasket delete and timing advance (.020) likely give it a bit of extra stress.

Yup, thankfully these have normal 14mm plug threads, and it's read between 155 and 160 over several tests. Decomp is plugged. Feels good when starting.

I had the cylinder off to check out the piston, which has time on it but the skirt measured ok, and ring gap was still reasonable. Forgot to take photos, but below are port shots.

Thanks for any hints, I'm not an expert with the modern Stihls. This one couldn't be too old, has the newer 100362B Zama. Serial # wasn't registered by whatever dealer sold it, but it wasn't used to cut wood. Never had oil in the tank, dirty with some kind of rock/masonry dust, spike and catcher missing, no sprocket. Coworker inherited it with lots of other half-running equipment from a relative's business in California.

Finally made time to work on diagnosing this 261cmII; spun flywheel side bearing. There was no play when cold, but I assume when it heated up it started slipping on the crank and leaking. The carb was very dirty with gritty junk so I already ordered a new one, turns out I probably don't need it. Crank isn't perfectly smooth, but it measures good (bearing ID is about .04mm larger than it should be) and with some green loctite she'll live to cut another day.

Now the larger problem is that the saw is now mine (owner told me to keep it in exchange for doing seals, fuel lines, and basic maintenance on 2 other saws). Should be fun to compare with the 550I and 550II, but definitely means I'll need to sell off at least one of 'em!
