I might have been exaggerating, but my point is, I don’t ever remember messing with tune on my modded 7900...

Have just been picking my way through a great thread on AS about the carb modding. My head hurts. I just wanna cut wood and not think too much about venturi ramps and POPs, but it's great reading though.
for me though, it looks like I'm stuck with my somewhat fickle tuning on the 7900. Which isn't so bad but could be better

I and my Dolmar PS-7900 & PS-6400 don't seem to have issues with carb settings as the weather changes!
I've set WOT right under the rpm limiter and never stuck that little red screw driver back into my saw - going about 3-4 years now without retuning.
Regarding sensitive tune, maybe it's a bad fuel quality thing?!

I also don't get what everybody is talking/complaining about the stock AF, but I admit I don't use my saws commercially.
I do check my stock flock AF every now and then, but there is never anything that needs cleaning.

When cutting mostly dry, hard timber that even with a sharp chain doesn't really produce 'chips', which is often, I found the fines in particular would clog the stock filter pretty quick. I seem to get longer with the HD filter before worrying about what's making it through or noticing it gasping for air.

The times my 7900 goes out of tune are often associated with changes in the weather. Or if I've gone too long cleaning the filter out. Fuel doesn't have time to go stale here, unless it was stale from the retailer, often, which is unlikely. One other observation on fuel which I thought somewhat interesting, I find the 7900 runs better on 91 octane than 95.

Depends on the filter.
The flocked one I can see getting dirty from time to time.
But both the white and black nylon filters I’ve never seen dirty. And if/when they do, just blow them off with air.

OK, dry dead wood is a different story regarding AF setups.
I mostly buck fresh oak and beech logs, makes huge chips!

Fuel filter?
Never changed one on any of my saws, the eldest is built 1985.

In regards of fuel octane rating, lower octane fuel ignites easier.
My saws seem to run great on local to me EuroSuper95.
I'm lucky so far, no ethanol laced fuel at the pumps yet!

My PS-6400 & PS-7900 both run the flocked AF.
My PS-7300 & PS-7310 both had the coarse mesh AF but I got them each the fine plastic mesh AF.

I don't have much run time on the PS-7300/7310's so I can't tell how well the fine plastic mesh AF fares.

Good info, thanks fellas.
Has anyone noticed any difference in fines making it through the filters? Which seems best?

I have a couple of the black ones. Didn't know about the white option. Which one is finer?
The black one will let some fines through while milling

The wood I see in some of your pics looks somewhat similar to stuff I cut that can be hard, dry and even a sharp semi chisel chain won't cut nice chips but more like milled flour:(. I have a Dolmar 6400 & a Solo 681 and use the flocked filters. My 681 came with the nylon filter when new and it would coat the intake with fines pretty bad. I stopped using the saw until my flocked filter arrived it was that bad. It would work well in other parts of the world I guess, they like the nylon filters where it snows apparently.
