If you buy it, to sell it later on, probably the 880. If you don't plan on selling, buy the new one.
I don't have either, but have run both (milling) and I didn't see any reason for any price difference between the two.
I asked the dealer, and he only murmured about the resale value.

Realize it takes another $200 to get it to run right. Make carb adjustable and add a 272 coil-that is if it’s a new green coiled saw. If it’s NIB and has been sitting, it could be the older black coiled saw which will require flywheel rebroach.

The 3120 is a simple beast, but a good ported 395 won’t be very far behind, is cheaper, and has a replacement OEM top end still available for around $125.

This ^^^^^^^^ exactly.

Buy the 3120 and don’t leave it stock. Send it off right away and fix it. An unlimited coil and modded carb so you can tune it properly really wakes up the 3120 and gives you the full benefit of all those 120 CCs.

Im back in the market for a big saw. More of a novelty to keep around if I need it. Got one guy thats got a 880, very good looking saw. I have yet to yank the Muffler off and give her a look. But it runs out strong. Got another guy with a brand new in the box 3120. Im a stihl guy, but I wouldn't mind crossing the line for a big saw. 3120 is just a hair cheaper than the 880. I have never done much research into both of these saws head to head, and I plan to leave both stock other than possibly a bolt on or two. Whats the scoop. Which one should I grab and why

I've never had a need in 38 year's of cutting.
to need anything larger than
The 288xp you already have.
Save your money have it ported
Or buy what you'll never use
And have a hard time recouping the cost
If you go to sell.
But by far the 3120 is my pick
Between the two.

The 881's are new and may not have all the kinks worked out so you better get 2 in case 1 goes down.

Whatever route you go I would get some port work done to either to open them up. I’ve watched a stock 3120 run and have ran my 880 stock before porting...they will let you down that’s for sure. Torque is the only thing they have going for them and they cut slow. I use mine for flush cutting stumps or milling exclusively. This is where they shine when they’re under a large load and keep powering through. Otherwise for general bucking and other similar tasks my 661/066 walk circles around it even in ported form. Given I haven’t turned up my 880 much but it is ported and shines under a load. Purpose built so to speak. I would agree with others and get the 3120 for cheaper and send it out for porting. Maybe take up milling to get some use out of it?

I've been beating this around in my head for awhile. However I was looking for something to mill with a 72" or longer.

The 3120 was cheaper had an manual oiler and took little work compared to the 880.

Only downside in my book was it wouldn't work with 3002/3003 bars with the normal adapter due to the oil port position. Which would be a downside if I wanted to use my 44" bar and it.

I also had thoughts of just buying a 661 to pair with my 660 and a double ended bar. Still weighing those options.

If you plan on keeping it a long time, 3120. If you think you're going to get tired of looking at it, 880.

Yea i've never seen a tree here that I had to have a saw that big for. Maybe two or three big cuts for a stump or a double but nothing that a 660 cant do once or twice. I done talked myself out of it again. I can do alot more with the money than sit it on the shelf in the garage

If you have the money to toss around for those saws, look for a hot 660/661 to buy instead. Now that’s some fun!

I have an 088 and its been one of the best saws I've ever had ,with a few simple adjustments(open muffler and max flow air filter)
I might be the rarity with actually needing a saw for the 5-6 big trees I cut in parks every year 50" + dbh ,
3 cuts and I'm gone , no hanging around the base of a big dead monster waitng for a limb the size of a normal tree to crush me.
One of the parks got a MS880 and it definitely does not have the snap that my 088 does . I cant comment on the 3120 except that most say the 395xp will do just about anything it'll do, and the 395 is a great saw.
If your going for stock big saws there's plenty of choices out there besides these 2 .

I’ve been burned on used 880s.

To the tune of I’d been better off buying a new one.

A New 3120 or 880 needs to be worked over by one of our respectable porters: otherwise a ported 660/661 will walk all over It in 36”-41” bar length wood.

You’ll be money ahead to buy a new 395 & have it Ported, Unless you are running a 50” or larger bar.

If so then a Ported new 120cc saw it is.
