This is what you would think to be a typical Lombard chainsaw. Well not so.
This is my second saw I have found on ebay. Most Lombards of this style are
of the 4.2 cube but Lombard made some that were 5.1 cubers. This is one I
just got. 83.5cc's. Going to do a full resto on this one as the top end is mint.
This one is the model Lightning IV.

That chrome should shine right up, they used the good stuff.

My other one has a full wrap. Thinking of sending it out for a rechrome.
Hardest part will be finding someone that is willing to do the decals.
Might be pricy since it would be a one off job.

A local sign company did this:

$25.

Printed three across on bumper sticker stock so I got a 'threefer'.

All they needed was a fair to good picture of the original. Worked it out on their 'puter.

If you havent Lee, consider giving Joe at Sugar Creek a call. I chatted with him this week. Im sure those decals would be simple for him.

I finished up a Super lightning not to terribly long ago. Fairly impressed with them for thier size.

That's reasonable Carl. Last time I had a local place do some it was 75.00.

John I know Joe pretty well. I know he is over welmed so I didn't
want to bother him for a one off decal but I may have to go that route.
He's made a few decals for me in the past.

If the legend is correct all the designs originated from the Homelite XL12 .In several displacements sold by several companies .Besides this 5 cuber if I'm not mistaken there might have been others .
According to a long time and now retired saw shop owner who ever designed this model slightly changed things so as not to infringe upon patents and sold similar designs to several companies,Poulan being one with a 60 cc model .I wish I knew all of them but I don't .

Al, I'm not sure who came up with this specific design first. Homelite and Lombard
were very close in the 1960's when both started to appear for market. Remington
also had there fair share as well with there largest the PL-7, PL-6 and SL-7 at a
wopping 95cc saw.

Wondering how this one ever turned out Lee, I know you're busy at this moment in time, I also grabbed a 5 cube Lombard model GLP-500 off the bay recently, would like to restore this one as well.s-l1600 (364).jpg s-l1600 (363).jpg s-l1600 (339).jpg

P1180239.JPG P1180245.JPG P1180246.JPG P1180243.JPG After doing a little more digging, the known 5 cube Lombard's of this series are the Lightning IV and V, also the GLP-500 and 500A, though Mikes site doesn't have all the specs including displacement, the only other one in this series that I believe is a 5 cuber is the Super AL-51, the big muffler and the model number make me believe this one is also 5 cubes.

If I ever find the time I'll take some pictures of several Lombards several Homelites and several Remingtons .Other than the colors and some pieces they are all just about the same .Poulan even sold a model very similar .It's been a bone of contention as to who actually came up with this design but it continued for decades .
With modern saws it's hard to believe in this day and age but at the time the 4.2 cubic inch Lombards were considered very fast .I have one in pieces in a box and to my surprise that Lombard Comango has a one piece crankshaft which if you think about it was very advanced .Unfortunately as with most that fail it died from bad crankcase seals .Fact I have two shelf queens that are awaiting seals ,works in progress so to speak .

I think I have both a pl6 and a pl7 in my storage trailer in the woods along with other saws that used to run at one time .I'm not even sure how many or what brand just they were freebies .I just have not had the time to to any restorative work in some time .Add to that several more modern saws awaiting some "enhancement ".
12-15 cords of oak that needs split and stacked .15 -20 dead ash trees .a building to build .A lady friend to spend time with .There just aren't enough hours in the day or days in the week sometimes .

A tell tale sign that it's a 5.1ci is the cylinder fins protrude further out from the upper handle/carb box area, my AL-42 in the first pic, the super AL-51 in the seconds-l1600 (373).jpg P1180245.JPG

Yep, That the one tell tale. Both of mine don't have the cover like your 51 has.
