Hey guys my brother in law has an ms291 that wasn't running very well and I pressure/vacuum tested it and found a torn intake boot but also I'm only getting 73 psi of compression. My question is can the ms391 or even the ms 311 p/c be installed on it just the same as the 290 to 390 conversion?appreciate the knowledge and input.

I very well could be wrong, but I think the 271 & 291 can interchange as well as the 311 and 391… but not between the platforms. There are two different styles of cylinders for the 291’s, so watch out for that if you’re buying a replacement.

Yes this is the new style with a "hose" clamp and not the 4 bolt style.

271 and 291 only. Be careful what you buy. Sellers list as 261 271 and 291 being the same. Some 261 parts that you think would interchange don’t like carbs and mufflers.

I had the option last summer to rebuild a burned out 291. The dealer informed me that the cost of the new parts made it very unattractive. I could have almost bought a new 291 for the same price.

Yup, pretty sure 271 & 291 are both clamshell where the 261 is pro style. I could be wrong.

I have a customers 271 here
It made it two months before
His son straight gassed it.
Dealer quote was around 420.00 to fix it.
His son bought a 290 cylinder and wanted me to put it on
Because Facebook told him it would fit
It won't fit.

There aren't many parts on the 291 that fit the 290 and vice versa. It's a different animal altogether.

I would not recommend the 271, 291, 311, 391 series Stihl to anyone purely because of how expensive parts are if you burn one down...they are basically a throw-away saw in my opinion. That being said, if you have a healthy 271, they run real good with a little extra intake duration and a muffler mod & timing advance. I have done two of them and they will easily out cut a stock 261 with the mods.

I am NOT a stihl fan I'm in love with the "other" orange brand. On another note he will more than likely be doing a knock off or A.M. brand p/c and that's just fine it's his prerogative,as well as this won't be his "every day saw" since the 291 burning up caused him to buy a brand new husqvarna 365 and he is LOVING it.

There are AM pistons available, but not cylinders. If the cylinder can’t be cleaned up, it’s going to be very spendy.

Are there not cylinders too? Is the 291 different than the 029? I didn't know that, but I ain't no expert that's for sure!

No cylinders for the 271 & 291, and yes they are different. The bottom half of the crankcase is molded into the chassis on the 291. Also, the stroke is different than the previous models. I think I saw an AM 391 cylinder recently, so maybe they are coming.

Thanks for that info, I thought the 291 was just an 029/290/291 plastics evolution.
