I'm working in another 036. This one an MS360 PRO.

Both the carb and intake boot have a pretty tiny diameter. The boot looks very restrictive to say the least.

This saw's carb gets its impulse through the boot. There's no seperate line.

An 038 boot fits OK.

Has anyone tried another carb option on this saw?

Can anyone post up some pics of an 038 carb?

Thanks. This model is another of my favorites. I have some dirty plans for it, muh ha ha....

I can post a picture of a Bing carb off a 038 in a few. I'm certain the choke is in the filter on a 038.

You can route the impulse thru bottom of wall if needed.

I'll look for a 361 carb too.

Do you have a 029/039 boot and carb?

036 has the odd choke lever, and throttle shaft is on the upper side, opposite than most stihls.

I have an AM 039 carb, I think. I bought as an 039, but when it came, it was identical to an AM 044 carb.

It's an odd setup for sure JOEY

Thanks gents. You think the shaft can be flipped?

How much bigger is the bore (if you don't mind).

Stepping in to learn, and hope to find that it's useful.

Bore, not enough to change. Venturi-- worth trying. Getting a choke to work is the question.

361 carb with a external impulse is worth looking at. Again, making the choke work is questionable.

Kevin, this looks like a tough conversion. I may be able to weld on tabs or flip shafts.

One things for sure, the 036 boot is very restrictive. I'll post a pic later of its outlet compared to that of an 038.

I'd say it has smaller cross sectional area than the carb bore.

The boot swap alone should help the saw.

Drill a hole and install a barb for a separate impulse line and use an 1128 boot. You'll have to plug the hole in the carb or use a gasket with no hole for the impulse and attach a cover with an impulse barb or drill a hole in the existing plate to install one.
HDA carbs have the same shape and configuration. You should be able to swap out the shafts with the 036 and damn near get it plug and play.

Which model saw would the HDA come off of?

The only HDA carbs I have here are for a 262 Husky. I'd have to measure the bores to see if it would be worth it.

Another option may just be opening the Venturi on the OEM ZAMA that's on it. Theyre so cheap it's easy to experiment.

346xp is another. Bigger doesn't always mean better when it comes to some of the higher performance carbs.
I'd definitely give the 262xp carb a whirl. I bet that thing makes an 036 run mad.

I'll take a look at the bores later today.

If only the coveted 87 is bigger, I don't see it working.

I could be quite wrong, but I do believe I need bigger in this case. I want more air flow.

While your comparing carbs, take a look at the 262 piston and a 36 piston
