I have used a bench grinder and dremel (fitted with their sharpening attachment). I have not had much luck with either. The best method I have seen is a belt sander. The Oregon grinder works good also but is pricey IMO, unless you sharpen commercially.

I use a HF 1"x30" belt sander with 80 grit, it works pretty well. Decently fast and you can keep your angle pretty consistent. Then I use a diamond file to take the burr off.

Before that I'd clamp the blade flat to a table and use a 40 grit flap wheel on a 4-1/2" angle grinder, Walter Surface Tech makes a really nice flap wheel. Then use a flat file to take the burr off.

Hf again 79.99 bucks or so doesn't over heat the blade's.
Sharpens uniformly it's easy to maintain the angle.
Axe's hatchets etc.
Are easy to sharpen as well if you're careful.download.jpg

No, the belt sander is faster at removing material than most hard wheels.

Try those 40 grit Walter flap wheels and you'll never want to use a hard wheel again, they move material!

I also use a flap disc on my 4.5" grinder. Vary the grit depending on the blade. I can get a pretty consistant edge this way.

+1.

I just hand file my blades. I can't justify buying a tool just to sharpen my blades, so I do the next best thing. lol

Once you have sharpened your blades, what method do you use to re balance them ?
