I ordered a new flex shaft grinder and will finish up the cylinder when it gets here. While I'm waiting on it I decided to touch up the paint on the front and back of the case. Tomorrow I'll mod the muffler.KIMG0527.JPG KIMG0528.JPG

I got the muffler modded today, It's an aftermarket muffler and I put a 1" pipe in it. Since I put the 272 cylinder on another saw and the 266 one will fit under the small cove I decided to put it on instead of the taller cover. I sanded down the top cover, it's a white top that someone painted black. I got most of the old paint off and primed it with Rust-oleum bonding primer and painted it Rust-oleum flat black, then baked it in the oven at 175 for an hour. On the rear of the cover is an air hole and I opened it up a 1/4" more.

Looks like I won't be putting that muffler on it. I didn't think about it before but it will be to tall and won't fit under the small cover. I found one of the smaller mufflers and ordered it.

Thanks for letting us know. I suspected that would have been a problem. I doubt my 61 would have swallowed it. I usually like to remain as stock as possible when upgrading any saw.

Managed to get the piston cleaned up and cylinder finished, I hit the numbers I was looking for. It's not pretty, no polishing, but it should work. Once I get the intake and heat shield matched up I can start getting it back together.

I got the intake matched up, made a gasket and put the cylinder on. while I was doing that I noticed that it looks like the chain had cut down into the bar oiler slot so I took a wire wheel to it and JB Welded it up.

I got it put back together yesterday afternoon and it failed a vac test so it got new seals and a new o ring on the oil pump. On the flywheel side the o ring looked ok but I put some Hondabond on it and the seal for insurance. All back together and passed a vac test. I also advanced the timing.

One problem I had was that I grabbed the flywheel for a single coil and installed it. It ran with the wrong flywheel but there was some kickback and some bogging. After two hours Three plugs, three carbs and putting the the timing back stock I gave up trying to figure out what the problem was. Went in the house and had a cup of coffie and it dawned on me that I could have put the wrong flywheel on it. I went back out, advanced the timing, put the correct flywheel on and it ran like it should. I'm surprised it ran at all with the wrong flywheel, the timing was way off. Below is a video of how it ran with the wrong flywheel. When the sun comes up I'll make some test cuts and see how it does.

That coffee brand was worth its weight in gold. It's amazing what a little caffeine can allow your brain to produce. I fixed an Echo 346 today that would not fast idle. The throttle trigger fastens to a cable that goes to the carb and the cable had stretched with 12 years of use. All I had to do was move the cable's sleeve 3 mm closer to the carb (one notch) and clamp it back down. Now it will fast idle and cold starting is once again a piece of cake..:)

I don't think I could function without my coffee.

I made the first cut with it and it does alright. It's got an $8, including shipping, Chinese carb on it and I'm not to happy with it. It could just be that the needle lever needs adjusted. I've got a 268 carb, a 234B, and while I'm waiting on the small muffler I'll put a kit in it and give it a try. Well here's a video of how it's doing at the moment.

The way it was running was bugging me so I skipped the 268 carb rebuild and tried it out. I think it's running a lot better now. :)

I leaned it out a little more and tried a 24" bar, it didn't do to bad, not up there with a 272 but considering that I only spent an hour or so on the cylinder, it did good. I should have opened up the port a little more but hind sight is 20/20. This will be the last video I make of it, I promise. When I get the smaller muffler and can put the top cover on I'll post a couple of pics. I also have a new old style recoil housing so it should look pretty good.

Got the smaller muffler, drilled a couple more holes in the baffle, took the deflector off, opened the hole up and put a deflector off of a 288 on it. I also put a spring and pulley from a 288 in the new recoil housing. A fairly new Archer 20" bar and a new LGX chain. All done

Where did you get your smaller muffler? Are they available aftermarket, I am in need of one for a project.
