Gramps is smart, why spend a chit ton of money trying to make a 350 go, when you can just plunk a 396 in and be done.
Anytime you have a opportunity to use a canted valve head engine over an inline version, take it.
It would be a great motor, but just too much for a kid. That and the 396 is more money than the truck cost lol.

Nothing wrong with rebuilding the original motor as a family project.
If you do decide to go with a 350, ones from 3/4 ton and bigger trucks have pretty tough blocks.

Nope found one for sale. He has a 348 in his El Camino.

Big block El Camino would be way more cool.

No worky for this guy today. Gonna stay home and watch it snow. Maybe go look for a buck later.[emoji16]
So few people hunts here i rode my Kodiak
Right up to a group of 15-18 deer 100ft probably.
Couple of 4-6 point's mostly does
They only ran when i fired up my loud ported 372.
I never heard a shot all week
And never saw people in the woods or parked along the roads
To warm i think.20191201_142650.jpg
Took the day off.
Old fellas fence is down again

i concur with you on the 396. We put a 390 4v from an old Thunderchicken in my buddy’s 78 F350 and that engine was an absolute MONSTER! Soooooo much torque. It just pulled and pulled and pulled. Nothing beats the torque of a long throw big block (except a long throw straight 6). We swapped a different carb onto it and used the factory hi-flo manifolds with an msd box ignition. The ONLY downfall to that engine was once a week you had to tighten the exhaust manifold bolts. For whatever reason no matter what lock washers you put on it the bolts would always loosen up. The studs were fine, but the bolts were always loosening themselves up.

and most of the heavy trucks had better cranks and rods. None of that powder cast stuff
