I've had a new 357 cylinder for a while now and I'm just getting around to putting it on something. While looking it over I noticed some marks in the bore. The way it's packaged the pin sits loose in the piston inside the cylinder allowing it to slide back and forth. Mine has dents in the bore from the pin hitting the bore.

May be hard to see but it's on both sides of the bore. I have a few ideas/concerns. I would think the aluminum is soft enough to go back to shape as the ring and piston pass over time. If the plating doesn't flake it should be strong enough to resist wearing through.

So, has anyone seen this before? And what opinions do you have. Oh yeah, this cylinder is being sent out for porting. I'd almost rather drop another $120 on a new one if I'm putting $300 into having it ported if flaking might occur.

I've seen softness like that on worn out cylinders where the plating is very thin. This might be something to contact Husqvarna about. Maybe show it to a dealer and see if they might be willing to get the ball rolling on an exchange from the factory.

That being said it'll be fine to run it as is and it shouldn't flake. My only concern is longevity if in fact the plating is too thin.

I zoomed in on the second pic and can see feint vertical lines between the dents from the pin that appear to be from running on a saw. It looks like the cylinder might be something that was refurbished.

I did purchase it from someone that a bunch of us know and trust so I'll contact that person for some ideas. In my opinion it's not the dealers fault so I started here.

I don't think that's a new cylinder and find it hard to imagine a pin rattling around in there would cause those kind of dents. Did you inspect it upon receiving the item?

You may find this interesting. I just happened to have a 357 top here too. I bought it from my local dealer. Check out the placement of my vertical lines....

I trust this dealer very much and many others around here do too but I get what you're saying. I just looked it over really quick and put it in storage when it showed up, that was a year ago. I went ahead and ordered another one. I'll use this one on a more beat up carcass.

Sorry if I sounded like a d***, wasn't trying to. we've seen pistons explode and not cause that much damage. Maybe it's a manufacturing issue.

Looks like mine. Lots of miles, bumps, hands etc between Germany and MI or any other place over here. Anything can happen. This could've been my pallet of cylinders.

Looks the same. Casting flaws? Didn't the 359 tend to have pin holes in the plating???

Are the pin holes seen in new 359 cylinders? I recently acquired a 2159 from a coworker. The topend had a lean seizure. When I tried cleaning up the cylinder, I noticed a bunch of pin holes on the exhaust side. Is this common?

Yup. Doesn't effect performance though. Not in a work saw.

I find that quite interesting. By chance is it a 537 24 85-02, auto decomp cylinder? I just received a non auto decomp and it's perfect.
