288xp proven muscle. They’re bad. I use a 272xp for the purpose you’re talking. I have both. The 288 is heavy for myself. One of those two saws would be affordable and very very reliable.

Well caught, and yes, on a part time basis one does not need the latest
or biggest, when there is proven older muscle still available, and cheaper too.

Is there a big difference in power between the 390 and 395,
is this the case in real world use.

There's a big difference between everything on these two saws. Power, size, weight, price and cost to maintain.
This is why I didn't recommend for an occasional use saw, but...if you want the biggest baddest out there to be had, the 395 is it, with the 661 right there too.

Buy a 395 and don't look back. It will oil up to a 42" bar, will pull the chain without issue, is a tough and proven design. Don't have a good husky dealer near you? 661.

Its always fine having more than enough saw, it isn't fine not having enough.

572 will act like a big boy saw when asked to. How well it holds up to such usage remains to be seen.
So far so good for the 572, I think Husqvarna had enough bad
press with a few of their precious saws to do them, they seem to
be beefing them up nicely.

Ten Euro difference here between the 390 and the 395

This is a good statement from what I’ve been told but I’ve also been told to buy lots of screws as they tend to fall out of huskies.

Say, my ported ms362, seems to me, is a very strong saw. How much stronger? I see that the ms362 weight is listed as 12.35 lbs and the ms462 is listed as 13.0 lbs. I am sure that is PHO. Ok... so far, the ms362 is ahead. Would you think the ported 362 would be equivalent to the stock ms462? If that's the case, I could just put a larger bar on the 362. Could it handle 28 inch bar? I have 20 on it now and shopped today for a 25 inch bar/chain. It would cost me about $101 for 25 inch Stihl bar and chain plus tax locally. If I were to buy an ES Light bar, it would be a bit more. The ms362cm is listed at 4.69 hp. (Mine is not m-tronic.) The ms462 is listed at 6.0 hp. That is 28% more hp. Do you think a quality port job could provide 28% increase in power?

Simple... dolmar/makita 64/73/79xx series. Priced right, smooth, reliable, and easy to work on.

My 7900 is very nice with a 28". Mine is ported. It compliments my 5105 and 6100 great. If you have some giants out there or think you are going to need/want bigger in the future I'd go for the 395.

For a dedicated 28” bar saw I would be looking in the 70cc class. I wouldn’t bother running a 28” bar on a 60cc saw personally. The chassis and oiler aren’t really built to do it long term.

In small wood your 362 will probably run neck and neck with the 462. But the bigger saws power will show itself with the longer bar and it will be able to adequately oil it.

If my assumption about the 362 Oiler being inadequate for a 28” bar is wrong help me out Stihl Bros.

The oiler is barely adequate for a 25" bar.

Stihl ms362 is rated to oil up to a 25”, personally I didn’t like a ms462 stock with a 32” bar not enough grunt for my liking. If price doesn’t scare you I’d buy 500i, ms 661 or the 395 husky. The 500i is very well balanced and has nice broad torque pretty light also. Yes the av seems on the soft side but I think it will hang a 32” light bar permanently just fine. The ms 661 and 395 don’t really need any introductions anymore

Did you run Styners 462 at Kevins? He was running a 32" bar with skip chain. The saw only had a muffler mod and timing advance. It had torque!

No i didn’t run his but the one that had the 32” on it got a muffler mod and timing advance done to it by me. It was definitely better but not something I’d run as a regular set up. If I need a 32” bar it’s going to be bolted to a 80cc plus saw maybe I’m impatient but that’s my liking. I’m thinking since he has a ported 362 I’d step up to one of the 80cc and up . Don’t know what flavor of ported ms362 he has but I’m sure it does ok with a 25” if needed but my plan would be the 20” on a 362 and a 500i with a 32”.

Really no such thing as a skip chain in my neck of the woods unless ordered in. I prefer full comp anyway because it’s less grabby to me when limbing .

What about a 24 inch bar on the ms362, would that be better than a 25 inch regarding oiling? I know that the Stihl specs call for a max of a 25 inch bar, not a 24 inch. On that note, I don't recall seeing a 24 inch ES Light bar but did see a 25 inch. Lighter is better! Perhaps one could buy a 24 inch light bar from another manufacturer.
