Thanks fellas!

I think I have a bad coil as the high speed is two turns open but it sometimes cuts good with the bar buried and then cuts out at lower rpm no load. [emoji90]

Pain in the rump !! Hard to say what you are dealing with exactly ..but I still think its more likely to be carb . Coils are much less trouble over all.

Agreed. The littlest of crud in a carb cause can a lot of headache and tail chasing.

How old is the saw? Has there ever been Ethanol fuel used in it?

Got me, I got it as a carcass the clutch had exploded on. Had to replace everything on the PTO side.

Dealer price for the freakin oil pump is $30. [emoji2960]

I see. I had a CS-490 act just like that 251 recently. I put a new carb kit as well as a new check valve/nozzle assembly in the carb and it runs like new. I believe ethanol ruins the check valves.
What carb is on the saw?

Zama.

Runs and cuts well enuff.

It is rather wonky for the first five minutes. After you work it hard it straightens up and goes good.

Carb is 1 turn on the low and two on the high.

My luck with Zama has not been good. [emoji13]

Fire up ok from cold with the choke/high idle setting and then knocking off the choke part with the leaver, just leaving it in high idle and pulling till it runs ?
Then how is it at starting from hot with just the lever in the run position.
Take it you haven't changed out the coil in the end.
