This will be a "build thread" with little to nothing to offer most of you as my skills and experience are limited compared to many of you but I figured the referb would be fun to chronicle and I could ask for opinions and help here (in addition to what I've already recieved from @dall and @PA Dan and @dustinwilt68 )

So here's how it started, doesn't look too bad for an old saw

The first thing I did with this saw that was sold because it wouldn't run was try to start it. Three or four pulls on cold start and it burbled two more pulls on war start and nothing but a hint of gas smell. two more pulls on partial throttle run and she's off to the races. (Note, all numbers half arse remembered) the saw rev'd ok and did a small test cut ok for a clearly dull chain. At that point I shut it off to give it a good once over. See if you can guess why it wouldn't idle.

I think it had a speck of sawdust in the carb. I cleaned it up, cleaned the filter, re-tuned the low end and got it to idle decent. Shut it off and 5 seconds later this joker waddles out from under the shed 5 feet away from me.

Luckily he seemed to busy slurping up mulberries to give me a passing glance.

Doesnt look too bad! Yours has the old air filter setup on it. They are not that hard to work on and most parts are still available.

Next was the compression test.

130psi didn't strike me as great but I didn't look up what it should be either. I pulled the muffler and it looked, well, meh. not awful, not great

I cleaned it off so not too much junk would fall in and pulled the cylinder. The piston may be able to be cleaned up but I'm thinking I'll just grab a new OEM or Meteor and some cabers
.

The cylinder looked better

but clearly needed some cleanup

looking better, still a little work left but I think it's going to end up really nice.

So this is where I'm leaving it until I get back from a long weekend away with the wife but I'm thinking of getting the other filter base and getting a max flow, muffler mod, little timing advance (how much?) and see what the squish and compression end up at likely without base gasket. Thought's concerns, grammar notes?

Yours is real pretty Dallas, is that rear cover painted? I think I will put an Elastostart on it if I get the compression up. Is your handle OEM? mine came with a china replacement but the OEM doesn't look too bad. I will need a brake flag.

Am I the only one that can't see pics?

yep, metal filter covers. Someone else couldn't see the pics over on the snag thread. I'm posting them from google. I hadn't checked the bearings, they're tight. Thanks for the reminder Dallas.
