Few years back we heard a massive clap of lightning and thunder that rang through the valleys for a good bit. We knew it happened out on the front of our place. Went looking around the next day and, sure enough, found a 30" red oak tree about 80' tall that was split right down the middle. There was bark and splinters, some splinters as large as baseball bats, laying 100' from the base of the tree. Had to be real careful felling that one. But, WOW, what a massive pile of oak firewood that made!!! Tree was in the woods and only had limbs at the top, but was close enough to the field that most of it fell in a mowed grassy flat spot. Fastest firewood cutting party we ever had up to that point in time.
