Because it's an open port cylinder, the piston is large and has nothing but skirt all around. Add in a healthy carb, and you can open the hell out of the ports and throw the fuel and air in there. I also didn't check, but I suspect because it's sort of a heavy piston that the flywheel may be a bit heavier to help balance it and retain torque. They can pull long bars well enough.
