So Bob, what about the different black coils like 537 16 21-04 Is my assumption that the last two numbers only significance the year of manufacturer, or do they actually mean something is slightly different?

Andre.

I think they mean revision # if I had to guess. 1 is probably older than 2 ect... not sure though. I just look up the coil number on ereplacement parts or parts tree and see what saws come up.

Did that too, you're most likely right.

so the black coils were on the 346 353 357 359 365 and 372

the 346ne got a 14.1k blue coil
372 xp got a blue coil but I don't know the limit
365 372 xt had a couple of blue coils later ones had ignition retard for starting and a lower fire rpm all were limited at 13.3k although some may not be labeled with a rpm limit.
I believe the 350 and 385 390 all had 13k limited coils?

does anyone know if the 353 had a limited coil?

Has anyone figured out why 394/5 coils fail more often than any others?
That’s a good question Shaun.
I’ve also seen or heard of partial fails in coils that can drive people crazy.
I had an unlimited coil on a 346. It would start and run great. 10 cuts in. It starts missing like its limited.

I think it has a lot to do with heat, that coil is kinda in a hole in the case that doesn't draw much air anyways. Add a bunch of muck on top of it and the amount of heat that big saw generates anyways and...

The newest and best coil is the 588 937 403. Switched to that a couple 3 years ago. Has the different start and advance curves. Works nice in any 372 including the original versions.

Also, the 455/460 still use the black coil.

The new replacement for the 254 made by Ducati has more advance than the older SEM units.
I like the 14,100 limited on the 390xp, otherwise a lot of black coils going into hi perf saws it seems.
Other than buying a new coil with it on, how does Husqvarna sell spark wire? I can buy the ends no trouble, but not the wire.

Steve have you ever measured the coil advance or just going by how much ta it can take.

I am gearing up to get my own timing readings now. A little bit of a pain but may provide some valuable insight.

Going by timing advance. Couldn't get the old SEM to run like the one with the Ducati, took a while for it to dawn on me what was holding it back, had to take most of the key to even get close.
Yes, it's hard to time every saw with the light when you "think" you have it down pat, then comes the curve ball and the saw needs to go, so you adapt and overcome and ship the saw. This is the exception and not the rule, most models come in quite close if not dead on the same from one saw to the next and repetition is doable.

Need some advice, I have a brand new 390xp, what's the best unlimited coil I can run on this saw?

Would this one that Im running on my 350 be optimal, or is there a better option?

Would probably do fine, but not optimal. It has the profile for the smaller flywheel.

Thank you Spike, could you advise me on what you would recommend, need to get this girl eating tomorrow.

Am I correct in thinking the 544047101 would be best for a stock 390?

I would look for a 13.6k coil. I think that’s the xt one.
Allows a higher rev limit better advance should fit the flywheel fairly closely.

from what I have seen it takes a fairly substantial port job to make a 390 go past 13.6.

They used to sell spark wire in lenght, if you ordered 5 spark wire you got one long wire.
Husqvarna themself claim they're cutting them nowadays 13" lenght, can't remember it's part number, the only one I found is # 501 53 16 01, if you order 5 you may get a 65" cable, or you may get 5x13"
