The 2065 should have come with an unlimited coil, you should be all set.

Saw had a blue coil on it (trashed) when I got it as a box of parts, I installed a used black 2065 coil (it ran AWESOME with that coil!!) but it pooped out. A spectacular member here hooked me up with 2 coils (a black one and a blue limited coil). I installed the black one (didn’t see a part number stamped on it) and the saw seems very lacking. I’m going to try the new blue coil tomorrow, which matches one of the part numbers in the OP.

This is interesting

I know randy @Mastermind has said how he would have two saws ported the same and one is stronger. After a part swapping it turns out the coil is what makes the biggest difference.

I know that you are right. But you would think a spark is a spark.
Any thoughts as to why?
It's more a matter of the ignition advance curve built in to each coil I believe. I've seen some saws fire at 22° and others at 37° btdc. Obviously, the one at 22° could use more advance.

That makes a lot of sense now. I still have a lot to learn.

Interesting...so what's the current oem unlimited coil to swap into a 346xp ne? Part number? I'm assuming this is still a worthwhile mod if BG delete and MM? Thanks for the info.

Unlimited makes it easier to tune for sure, but I’m pretty sure the blue coil makes better power.
Saw never sees above 14k in the cut anyway

So basically the black coils are interchangeable? the profiles are just slightly different so they fit up better with the flywheels. The blue coils can be interchanged, but the ignition timing curves may be different.

I have a black coil 537 16 21-04 which was made in 2004. I plan on using on a 390. I assume this is the same coil as a 537 16 21-01 that has a later manufacture date? To me it looks like the last two digits coincide with the year the coil was manufactured? as I also have a 537 16 21-02 coil made on 2002.

If you can find one a blue 346 NE coil works good on a 390, great curve in it.

I have one with the 14,100 rpm limit, and see some have found gains with that coil, I just prefer having a fully unlimited coil. Some 390's can spin a little more than others.[emoji6]
