I don't know boys? I have been rebuilding and working on saws for about five years now and have never run into this. I have a Husky 51 that I put a new piston and rings in, it has 150+ compression, new coil and great spark, fresh fuel and will not start. I take that back, it started with fuel in the carb on the first pull after the rebuild and then sat on the shelf for a week while I waited for a muffler, now not even a pop. I've pulled the plug and turned to saw upside down for a day to make sure that it wasn't flooded and nothing. Time for a chain and a pull down the road at 40.

Its got to be basic fault if it ran...Did it run for long before putting it on the shelf ? You say its not flooded... was it wet in the cylinder after pulling over? if it is flooded or you want to find out...then you could put piston at TDC ..pull the throttle to open butterfly and tip the saw backwards to see if any petrol comes back out of the crankcase .

I ran a dwell meter on it as I turned it over and it seem to fire just before tdc, the flywheel has the built in key/part of the wheel and I dwitched to a flywheel off a 254 with the same response.

It may still be a flooding problem, I did empty some fuel out of the muffler after the no start.

I've been thinking a bit more about it and remember putting some ethanol buster stuff in the last can of fuel, wonder if that crap is the problem? I use 93 octane and about 45/1 mix.

Thanks for the offer, I have a built 55 on the shelf and some parts saws, I don't have another flywheel and need a 55 cylinder for another saw.

How about your metering lever in the carb? Could it be too high, causing to put too much fuel in?

I'm no help, but liked your "pull start it" comment. I feel your pain. Nuff' to make you take up cussin', ain't it?

You can always justify another saw.

I'd install a new plug and pour a little gas into the plug hole or carb if it's not flooded. Sometimes a plug will fire out of the cylinder but not when under compression. Any plug that's been fouled (wet) is sketchy.

Agree with beagle on a vac/pressure test. I'm assuming you did it though Dana! Hope your able to resolve it soon whatever is causing it. No one needs to see a mad man driving with a 51 behind their car. Could send someone to saw rehab seeing one abused like that :)

I'm going to put this on hold for a day and let the saw really dry out and then retry the start. When I first fired it the saw ran and idled as it should so I didn't do a pressure test, might have to. Yes I have meters and used a dwell to check timing as best I could.

Is the fuel line soft and mabe colapsing. Had that happen once. Saw would start if ya squirt fuel in carb but wouldnt draw fuel from tank to carb.
