Any thoughts on a Marlin 30-30 lever action rifle? They can be had much cheaper than a Winchester.

Marlins are ok. The only decent ammo is the hornady leverevolution ammo. If it's a marlin try to get an older one b4 thr cross bolt safety. Not a big deal either way. I've had a few of them and never keep em. I usually get mine for under $200.

I've heard that they are good brush guns. Which, to me, is under 100 yds.

If 100 yards is a long shot it should work good.
