Are the grey cases common? This is the only one I've ever seen.

I can't seem to find any information about the grey/gray carrying cases though. Stihl website doesn't show any size case in grey. Maybe some dealers would know...

I have one as well that came with a 028 super I got a few years ago.
Mine is beat up and held together with zip ties.
So not collectible.

I must have 5 or 6 of these in orange. The only time I use them is when I take the wife's ride to pick up a saw.
I have the orange ones with at least 3 different latch systems.

I only have seen orange cases. They will turn "yellow" if left in the sun but never saw a gray one. Pretty cool! I try to always transport saws in cases. Better for the saw and the surrounding stuff.

To the best of my knowledge, the gray cases are late 80's early 90's era. I have some vintage stihl literature that has a pic of one that is circa 1990.

Well, there aren't any 13 mm nuts on a Stihl. That's probably why they did that.

You need to get back into the eighties more, they most certainly had the smaller 13 mm hex bar nuts at one time...but yes the later saw pictured I'm sure didn't.

Someone just photoshopped this; Note the color of stone in the bottom right and then the color of the stone in the top right.

I can assure you there's no tomfoolery, I own the saw and case in the pic.

I stand corrected then, I thought this was something you pulled off google or something. Looked it from the picture. I have never seen one.

That is fresh dirt in the bottom of the pic, not stone. Photo was at the guys house I bought it from, new construction.
