Echo cs-400 bolt for bolt video!

tore into a saw that was cooked, part 2 will be the rebuild.

some things I really like about this saw, but after getting it running, its nowhere near my 350's for performance. ...even if they were stock I think they'd do considerably better.

one thing is a must, remove the limiters on the carb....though not covered in this vid series, this seems to be at least one of the things that contributed to killing this saw

I think there are quite a few comparisons that can be made... I understand the engine size is different, but $ , weight, and a bunch of other things are comparable. unfortunately, the cat muffler really restricts the cs-400. I have not an do not plan on exploring this, as this was not really the purpose of the rebuild video. I needed to move this saw quickly, so I have not messed w/ the muffler, though supposedly it could be a contender performance wise if the cat is removed.

that said, for the $$, the weight, the overall purpose of the saw, the 350 has more to offer I think. just my opinion though. maybe if the cat was removed it would start to change my mind.

whats interesting about the cs-400 clamshell design, the whole thing is self contained, and bolts to the plastic chassis. the 350, though clamshell, uses the plastic chassis as the bottom half of the clamshell, and uses a riser block/bearing cup on the other side, THEN the cylinder head. the beauty there is its modular, and you can mess w/ it. the cs-400 I wouldn't mess with... once factory sealed I'd leave it until it toasted

You really don't fully appreciate most modern echos unless you open up that muffler and retune the carb.

I scored this brand new cs490 off Flea-bay for 250 to my door.

Bone stock and brand new:

Pull the muffler and remove the stupid little tube out from under the deflector and cut the face off the deflector.

Give it some gills on the other side of the muffler.


And it wakes right up just like most other modern echos do with the same treatment:

I'd say 25-30% gains are worth the 30 minutes.

I mod most of the saws I do. this one I didn't, needed to move it quickly. had I known it would make that much difference I might have opened up the muff.

believe me, I do appreciate a lot of the features on the echo, and was quite surprised how much I liked certain things about it.
