I have a 10’ CX-9 with the 3.7L. It is leaking coolant from what appears to be a weep hole into the intake valley. Looking at a replacement pump and doing alot of reading the pump has one weep hole that should dump the coolant out behind the alternator.

Mazda srvc was zero help. Anyone know these engines so I can pick your brain?

It has two weep holes. One behind the alternator and one in the valley. Your water pump is leaking. The water pump is drivin by the timing chain. The timing chains have to come off along with the intake, valve covers, and obviously the timing cover. It takes me about 8 hours to do one with all the tools and lift and stuff. You can do it in the car but is much faster and eaiser if you just drop the whole engine and transmission out.

Oh, get it fixed now. If the pump mechanicaly fails you are looking at puting heads on it as well.

Thanks Steve. I wasnt able to verify the top weep hole from any of the reading Ive done.

I do not have a lift to drop out the engine so I will be doing the job engine in. Thanks for your reply.

My technician had his daughters Mazda in our shop for a few days to do the same job. Definitely a PITA, but doable .

Ive never messed with a variable timed engine. Keeping the time is the only part of the job Im concerned about. Going to order the cam blocks.

Dont need them. Line the marks up on the chain to the sprocket and you're good!

I did call few shops just to see. Mazda quoted me $2100. One shop wouldnt even do it and the other was hesitant but said $1400 plus parts.

I can get the parts for just under $400. And that includes the cam blocks and stretch belt tool.

Tensioners are also a good idea while in there too. Have you done this kind of work before? Like yo know to put #1 at TDC befor you take the chain off and such?

You will also need a torx plus socket to get the cam phaser off to remove the primary chain. Give me a sec and ill see just which one you need.

Tensioners are in the kit. Setting all three timing marks corresponds with #1 at tdc right?

Just make sure you are at tdc before you remove the chains. It will be a mess if you take it all off then try to line it all up.
