Hello Amigos. Bought a couple .404 chains for my works awesome at the county yard. 32 inch bar. I swapped it from 3/8 just changed to .404 tip. Chains I bought were what saw shop book called for. 95 drive links, but they were a link short. 96 is what works. We were stumped, and I hadn't run .404 in years so outa the loop. Any ideas why the difference. Also I'm running a 7 tooth sprocket.

Looks like when you changed the tip on your 3/8" bar to a .404" tip, that bumped up the required chain loop to another drive link. Bank error is in your favor because that means the number of left and right cutters in the same, 24 on each side. I am a bit surprised that the .404" sprocket tip fit the 3/8" pitch bar that well.

I recently put a .404 Stihl tip on a 25” Stihl lightweight bar to run on the 500i. Mine’s ported and I’m hoping it loads the saw up some. I like .404 the best. Tip was a perfect fit.

Something similar arouse recently but it was for 10 series McCulloch bars ,24" if memory serves .As I recall again noting who actually made the bar those could be either 81 or 84 drivers in 3/8" .This is a simple fix ,just put another drive link on it .

We added a link already just trying to understand why. All guides say 95dl and it's 96. A stihl lightweight

Nothing outcuts .404
I agree completely. As for the 500i, I haven’t run it yet. I ran an 8 pin 3/8” set up and was not pleased. Thing doesn’t need more speed, it needs more bite. I’m betting it’ll pull the .404 like it was meant for it. At least I’m hoping for it. Nothing cuts like .404 or for as long.

Awesome. My friends here are falling timber with them, wearing 32inch and 36inch .404 some saw are ported. But I feel if I threw .404 on my 500i 32 inch or so. I'm confident it would put a smile on my face. My work 461 just has a west coast muffler plate, so other than that stock. 32inch bar and it pulls that .404 very well

My 9010 came with a 92dl chain that I assume fit the makita/dolmar bars, but I found that the same length Oregon bars I got needed 93dl. The strange thing is that with 93dl it makes a pefect 29", so maybe the dolmar bar had less width. I was able to get the 92dl to fit by taking the rim off, put it under the chain beside the bar, then roll it to the tail of the bar and put the whole bar/chain/rim assembly on at once. I did a similar thing with a 2511 when oregon sent me a 66dl 1/4 chain instead of 68dl, I just took the clutch off and slid it back on through the drive links.

I am changing to a thicker chain because I have a short 22" guide bar without a star
