I have heard about (and even had one) 10 mm saw loose a piston pin clip, but I'm wondering how many people know of rod bearing failure on these engines. Seems to me that it is infrequent.

I'm sure a firewood saw would be different than a production saw.

I've seen some old 10 mm former production saws that are still going also.

But I will likely choose to mill with other saws, although I have used it a bit in the past.

Zactly......
Hence the pin size
well that means pistons cant be swapped from a 10 to a 12 or via versa due to conrod dia and width. so we are back to the original question can a 12mm jug go on a 10mm saw and vice versa.

granted ring pins are closer, but only by .5mm. to me it looks like yes as the rings ends wouldnt be that close to the inlet port.

edit: unless there is a different wrist pin bearing which can take up the difference in dia of the conrod.
i have 2 044's here. 128664*** and 127658*** both measure 14 dia of the ID of the conrod and both 13mm wide.
what was the serial no. cut off from 10 to 12mm?

ok. Medicat info has been unbelievably handy, and i think i have answered my questions above.
the needle bearing for a 10mm is 10x14x13 or 10 ID 14 OD 13wide.
the needle bearing for a 12mm is 12x15x15 or 12 ID 15 OD 15 wide.
pistons can not be swapped at all.. jugs can in theory. it all depends on port width v's ring pin width.

here are some more interesting (i hope) PDF's from the medicat.

I've never heard of any failures because of the 10 mm pin.

There were not that many but it was enough of a concern that Stihl decided to up the bearing size to 12mm just to make it a bit stronger .
These saws were popular with loggers mostly in the east so they were seeing some tough use . We had lots come in from Quebec loggers that had failed but most had tweaked the high speed to get more RPM's .
They would not leave the friggin things alone , had to have them screaming to cut faster o_O

Those are both 10mm saws, I believe the cut off was 129382***

You can fit a 12mm crank in a 10mm case, but you need to clearance the case.

I've got 2 10mm 044s and a 12mm 440, they are all good runners.

This is what is on the Bailey's Website (correct or not) for their 10mm piston:

Important Note* Newer 044 chainsaws (after serial number X 29 382 283) have a 12mm wrist pin.

Jeremy, I will definitely go with your #, but I don't think either one is a "hard" #, I hear a few late ones were produced.

How is the new job treating you?

The failures were not from the small end, but rather the big end bearing.
That is why you must clearance the case when putting a 12mm crank in a 10mm saw.

Thanks for making that clear , the whole crank and bearings were beefed up .

I actually have boring tool that Germany sent the Stihl Tech Dept. to enlarge the case to fit the updated crankshaft .
