I went by one of my suppliers today to pick some things up. He deals in industrial/mining equipment and caters to loggers as well (no new saws, mostly hydraulic oil, chokers, etc). I walked to his "Junk Pile" and there sat an early 026 red lever/metal tag saw. I picked it up, took it outside and she fired on the third pull. I asked how much for it and he said $100. I didn't have time to look closer, but it felt strong. He said I could pull the muffler and look at the piston. Even if it needs a P&C, would it be worth it? It needs a cleaning and has been used, but is in pretty good shape overall. Thoughts?

He sat it in his office. He just bought a bunch of stuff from a hardware store that went out of business. Not sure if they were a dealer or what. I will be back next week to check it out better. Trying to get him to pull the muffler and send me a pic tomorrow. The chain catch was even intact.

They seem to be sought after saws. What's the deal with the red lever? If I had the saw building experience as most of you all, it would be a no brainier. I guess if it needs major work, I can always learn on it. How many CCs is the 026?

Remember horizontal lines are bad on the piston and old magnesium is a fire hazard!;)
Haha, I know better than that. I am some what mechanically inclined, just haven't worked on saws.

Grab it, even if it has a scored piston. Lost count of the numbers of them I have rebuilt but its more than 40, lots of aftermarket parts for them if you need to go that route. I try to use only OEM for the running mechanical parts but the AM plastics and carbs have worked great on more than a few I built.

I bought one last fall at an auction. Early one with red lever and metal badges. Needed new A/V mounts and a good cleaning. Have $50.00 for it. The first I used it was last Monday and very happy with it.

The red means it must have been on a firetruck. Lol.
A great saw at that price and easy to learn to repair. Especially with the help you"ll find here. Grab it.

Is that a decomp valve or a screw in the top cover?
