my 038 is leaking from the chain sprocket. What should I look for to fix it? Or is this normal. I don’t know where the bar oil comes from either. Have figured that out yet. I am still figuring this thing out. It leaking when I rotate the saw onto it side. And when it’s running. Thanks for the info.

So replace the clutch side seal and which bearing should I check. The sprocket bearing? And damage to the cylinder? Should I just do a full rebuild?

Or are you talking about the drive ball bearing on the bar side?

you need to check the crank main bearing if the seal is leaking more than likely the bearing is bad
Maybe you know something I dont. Why would leaking bar oil point towards a bad crank seal and possibly a bad main bearing?

To clarify. I was just say I am not sure how the bar gets oiled. So not sure where the port is for living the bar and chain. I removed the sprocket and cover and that entire area was saturated dripping in dark colored burn like oil. Not sure where it’s coming from yet bc I haven’t gone further than that yet. It could be the oil pump I suppose as well but I am glad that this has force my hand to open everything up and investigate. I will keep you posted when I receive my parts and I have a chance to go further. I hope that I ordered everything for the job but who knows. I went crazy on the part break down.

Was this ever resolved? I have a no 38 here at my garage and leaking oil everywhere as well. I'm wondering if there is a common oil leak location on these saws?

I am in the process of a full rebuild on it. Surprising enough this machine looks amazing clean everywhere but under the clutch. So I am hoping it will be the crankcase seal. I will find out more after I figure out a way to split the case. Thank you. For checking in.

If it is anything like my 036...

I looked under where the oil pump is and it was full of oil and black sawdust, it was packed full. I though wtf....so I cleaned it all up with kerosene. I thought about doing a p&v test but as the saw was running ok... I just fired it up and used it f9r a tank full of fuel... then stripped it down again ar9und the oil pump area. There was very little sawdust but I could see bar oil and looked into the oil pump, were the worm gear and cog is. Bar oil was leaking down the cog shaft (worn shaft) onto the cog then onto the worm and left a oily messs for the sawdust to stick to. And over time it just got packed full

Edit a new oil pump fixed it..

Thank you for this. I definitely think that the oil pump was bad on mine as well but still decided to go with a full rebuild. I will keep you up dated with what happens. Going to build a crankcase splitter this week.

I am aware of this. I hope i didn’t make it sound like I thought the two systems were linked. I just assumed there was multiple things wrong with my saw. I am a firm believer my oil pump didn’t work and it wasn’t getting any oil into the system so but a bad worm gear but all the oil and build up nasty dirt under the clutch leaves me to believe it was the crank case seal. Everything else was pretty clean.

Got the case split and everything cleaned. Going to reassemble on Friday if I have a chance.

You could find a new worm .Chances are the pump is okay because it's made of aluminum .I've changed the worms and the drive gears because they do wear out in time .Never had the actual pump go bad though .I also about think it's the nature of those things to dribble little bit .Which is not so bad I dribble a little bit myself if I drink too much coffee or beer .

The IPL does show a sealing ring 12 by 16 by 3 9643 950 1160 .I don't know if it's an o-ring or a flat ring but it could be leaking .
