Got a message and it reminded me I had to give a little update.

I don't know if anyone else has done this, or how it is going to work out long term. But what I did was grind the devider out of the cylinder and part of the intake. So far the initial impression is that it idles much better and is more responsive. Have not had a chance to get into anything over 10" so not sure if it gained anything in the grunt department yet.

Carry on.

Oem piston Hyway cylinder. (Long story but thats just how it worked out on this one)

Edit: I will update again after a half a dozen tanks and see if it has leaned out or blown up.

Anybody know how the mtronic 362's respond to a timing advance?

Bumped the timing up about 1/4 of the key. Made a noticeable difference. Held it's rpm better in the cut. Might try bumping it a little more after another tank or two.

Thanks for the details, I was not sure what had changed. FYI, my 362 is a Ver I, but my 261 is a Ver II, very light.

I think that sounds like at least enough. Since the key is part of the flywheel, I would not go overboard.

But, glad to hear you found some gains.

You're welcome. My 261 is also v2. I've been happy with my 360, but Randy says a lot of good things about the 362, so I want to try a v2.

Randy did both my 261 and 362, and I like em both!
Mike, I rebuilt a 362 last spring that the operator burned out by straight gassing it among other things. This one needed a new top end, but it also needed a new coil (IM) that went down at the same time. Plastic was beat up also. I replaced them all and it runs today.

It amazes me at what operators can do to beat up these saws.

Has anyone got a photo of one of these things on a scale, power head only without fluids by any chance? It's one of the few saws missing from the chainsaw weight gallery.

I don't, but I believe Ver I will come in right around 13 lbs, and Ver II at about 12.5, IIRC. I have seen it posted in the past.

The most worn out adjective in the English language. It has been used so many times that I no longer have any idea what it means. I recall the Chevy truck commercial showing a lady standing on the rear bumper looking at an empty truck bed. That's the word she used to describe it. What a joke!

I have to admit that some things about the 362 I do like. But for the most part I have to say it's far from awesome. I would rather have a 036 than a 362 for power. The 362 av is nice and I am making progress on the power on this one. I guess I just got ruined by running some better 60cc class saws before a 362. If I hadn't I would probably be singing the praises of them like most everyone else. It's a good saw but it's out classed in the power department.

I think if they changed the porting to the 461/661 style it would be a improvement

Little update. Gutting the strato and advancing the timing helped a little. The saw starts, idles and holds revs in the cut better than it did before. But I'm going to put a stock oem cylinder back on it and sell it off returned to factory original. I have enough in my 362 box to put together two more from parts and I am going to experiment more with those than a good looking salable saw.

I'm going to put one together with the mtronic carb, and a second with the carb, coil and flywheel from a ms391. Just had them side by side and they swap right over. So I'm going to give it a try.

Mtronic saw will be bone stock (baseline for reference). Carb saw will have the timing advanced, strato gutted and muffler opened up.

I won't recommending gutting the strato yet. I don't know if it will shorten the life of the saw or not. So please don't grind away on your pride and joy.
